WHAT IS ARNIS?

 Arnis is
the national
martial arts
of the
Philippines
that can be
performed
individually
or with a
partner
using a
single stick
or a pair of
sticks for
striking,
blocking and
can also be used for self-defense.
 It was before the colonization of the Spaniards
when Arnis was created, and it was called Kali back
then and the techniques of the art is focused on

bladed weapons fighting.
 This fighting system was renamed “Arnis” in
1873 which is derived from the word Arnes which
means defensive armors used on the Moro-Moro plays
with colorful trapping.
 Some of the noted enthusiast and practitioners of Arnis formed the National
Arnis Association of the Philippines (NARAPHIL) with the objective to unite all
Arnis group in the Philippines. They are the founder of Aglipayan Church Rev.
Gregorio Aglipay and Major Favian Ver.
 In July of 1986 Arnis Philippines (ARPHI) was established with the same
objective. It is a self-defense system of Filipino martial arts founded by the late
Remy Presas. The goal was to create an injury- free training method. This is also
believed to be an effective self-defense system in order to preserve the older
Arnis system.
 Remy Presas is the founder of Modern Arnis.
 President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo signed the Republic Act. No. 9850 in
2009 that mandates Department of Education to include the sport as a Physical
Education course. Among the priority sports in Palarong Pambansa (National
Games) beginning 2010, Arnis was included.
 Now, Arnis is part of Filipino culture and was used as form of self-defense.

a. Hold the stick one fist away from the punyo (butt) of
the stick. Close the grip with the thumb.

Two ways of holding the stick:

• Rear foot held at a 90-degree angle.
