KEY QUESTIONS:
1.HOW METAMORPHIC ROCKS ARE FORMED?
2.HOW UGNEOUS ROCKS ARE FORMED?
METAMORPHISM
is the process of change in the form and structure of rocks due
to intense heat and pressure.
It comes from the Greek word metamorphoun meaning
transform or change shape.
Metamorphism can involve changes in the physical and
chemical properties of rocks in response to heat, pressure, and
chemically active fluids.
Metamorphic rocks are commonly formed underneath the
earth.
IN METAMORPHISM , Rocks do not
actually melt. They become more
dense, more compact.
 Minerals may also be changed or
rearranged due to chemical
reactions and it involves fluids that
enter rocks.
FOLIATED METAMORPHIC
ROCKS
Mineral flakes appear to be
parallel to the rock and look
layer.
When rocks break, a thin rock
fragment will result.
NON-FOLIATED METAMORPHIC
ROCKS

Minerals appear to be randomly oriented

without obvious banding and have a granular
appearance.
When rocks break, there will be no layers
and they will not flake apart into thin layers.
