1
Objectives

 Introduce the «global» contents of SIM

 Show organization impact on management of manufacturing

and support function teams

 Present principles, concepts and tools management.

3
Why SIM ?

People commitment

Product-process Management of industrial

engineering and logistic processes

The SPS and its operating principles entail major changes

in the different groups of people involved in manufacturing.

SPS 0078 EN ind AC Section 6 : lean & flow manufacturing Training

4
Why SIM ?

People commitment

n Quality product, service quality,

productivity and elasticity come from
employee commitment rather than a
particular technique.
n Competitiveness depends on the
initiative and intelligence of everyone.
n People commitment must be supported
by a consistent social policy and
management system for the whole site.

5
Why SIM ? New operating mode

 The SPS, Industrial Excellence programs and the physical changes they bring
about within the manufacturing organization lead to:

 A new operating mode among operating personnel ( new shape line).

 Different demands in relations between cell managers and operators.

 Suitable means of «reading» Manufacturing Performance.

SPS 0078 EN ind AC Section 6 : lean & flow manufacturing Training

6
Why SIM ? New operating mode

 Lean conditions (one piece flow, minimum stock, reduced throughput

time…) create the need for increased responsiveness on the part of
production support functions ( Supply chain, Maintenance, Methods
Engineering, Quality…).

 It's a new relation mode between Manufacturing and support Function.

10
What is SIM ?

 Definitions

 SIM is a system based on a close relationship with frequent contact

between line managers and their staff.

 The aim of SIM is to:

«Put staff in an optimally effective position to achieve, maintain and

even systematically improve the desired level of performance and
attain such effectiveness»

 SIM concerns both Production and Support Functions.

SPS 0078 EN ind AC Section 6 : lean & flow manufacturing Training

11
What is SIM ?

 SIM in Industrial Excellence

The system links up the production sectors and the support functions

It synchronizes the support functions with the specific needs

of the production sectors

Means

 Implementation: Means

- A continuous improvement process

- An event-driven cycle
- Basic rules

14
A continuous improvement process

 Steps in Process

Define scope of the activity

Determine success indicators

Compare results to expectations

 Identify causes for any gap (5 why)

Congratulate 
& Identify solutions
Encourage

Set up the action plan

Take actions to meet deadlines

Continually review progress

SIM
cycle

The SIM cycle is the essential structuring element. It establishes the link
between production process and support functions.

SPS 0078 EN ind AC Section 6 : lean & flow manufacturing Training

16
Basic rules

 a common language: green / red

 objectives known to all and displayed in the workshops or departments

 performance to be measured at frequent intervals

(e.g. by the hour for the production line)

 systematic search for reasons for disparities in performance

(search based on facts and not on impressions)

 actions given priority according to what is at stake

(focus on the 2 or 3 major dysfunctions noted)

 systematic feed back to the teams on defined actions and deadlines
