• The series field coils are connected in series with the load, while the
shunt field coils are connected in parallel with the armature coils.

Solution:
A short-shunt compound generator delivers a load current of 30 A at 220 V, and has armature,
series-field and shunt-field resistances of 0.05 Ω, 0.30 Ω and 200 Ω respectively. Calculate the
induced emf and the armature current. Allow 1.0 V per brush for contact drop.
Brush drop = 2 × 1 = 2 V
Eg = V + series drop + brush drop + IaRa
= 220 + 9 + 2 + 1.56 = 232.56 V
