MIDTERM DC SERIES GENERATORS

WEEK/ MODULE- 4
The field windings are connected in series with the armature windings.

DC SHUNT GENERATORS

The field windings are connected across the armature windings.

EXAMPLE: A series generator delivers a current of 100 A at 250 V. Its

armature and series field resistances are 0.1 Ω and 0.05 Ω. Determine the
generated emf.

Solution:

EXAMPLE: A shunt generator delivers 50 A of current to a load at 110 V, at

an efficiency of 85%. The total constant losses are 480 W, and the shunt-
field resistance is 65 Ω. Calculate the armature resistance.

TYPES OF COMPOUND GENERATORS ACCORDING EXAMPLE: A short-shunt compound generator has a shunt field resistance of
77 Ω, a series field resistance of 0.008 Ω, a commutating-pole winding
TO METHOD OF COMPOUNDING THE FLUX resistance of 0.005 Ω, and an armature resistance of 0.02 Ω. When the
armature current is 128 A, the generated voltage emf is 234.2 V, solve the
power delivered to the load.
Cumulative compounded- the series field windings create flux that aids or in
the same direction as the shunt field winding flux. Solution:

Differential-compounded- the series field windings create flux to oppose the

flux created by the shunt field windings.

TYPES OF COMPOUND GENERATORS ACCORDING

TO THE DEGREE OF COMPOUNDING

Flat-compounded generator- the terminal voltage at no-load and full load

voltage are approximately equal.

Over-compounded generator- the terminal voltage at full load is higher than

the terminal voltage at no load.

Under-compound generator- the terminal voltage at full load is lower than the
terminal voltage at no load.

DC GENERATOR WITH INTERPOLE WINDINGS

OR COMPENSATING WINDING

These windings are used to counteract the distortion of the main field flux
caused by the phenomenon called armature reaction. These windings are
connected in series with the armature windings.
