A DC generator in which current is supplied to the field winding from an external DC source is called a separately excited DC generator. SELF-EXCITED DC GENERATOR
A DC generator whose field winding is excited by the current
supplied by the generator itself is called a self-excited DC generator. SELF-EXCITED DC GENERATOR
Accordingly, the self-excited generators may be classified as
Shunt wound generators Series wound generators Compound wound generators. Short Shunt wound Generator Long Shunt wound Generator SHUNT WOUND DC GENERATOR
In a shunt wound generator, the
field winding is connected across the armature winding forming a parallel or shunt circuit. Therefore, full terminal voltage is applied across the field winding. SHUNT WOUND DC GENERATOR
Its is suitable for applications which require stable speed
such as blowers, fans, centrifugal and reciprocating pumps, lathe machines, machine tools, milling machines, drilling machines etc. SERIES WOUND DC GENERATOR
In a series wound generator, the field
winding is connected in series with the armature winding forming a series circuit. Therefore, full line current IL or armature current Ia flows through it. SERIES WOUND DC GENERATOR
Suitable for high starting torque such as cranes, hoists,
elevators, trolleys, conveyors, electric locomotives, etc COMPOUND WOUND DC GENERATOR
In a compound wound generator, there are two sets of field
windings on each pole. One of them is connected in series (having few turns of thick wire) and the other is connected in parallel (having many turns of fine wire) with armature. LONG SHUNT COMPOUND WOUND DC GENERATOR
Long shunt in which the
shunt field winding is connected in parallel with the combination of both armature and series field winding. SHORT SHUNT COMPOUND WOUND DC GENERATOR
Short shunt in which the
shunt field winding is connected in parallel with only armature winding EXAMPLE 1
A shunt generator supplies a load of 5500 W at 110V through a
pair of feeder conductors having a resistance of of 0.02 ohm each. The armature, shunt field resistances are 0.15 ohm and 50 ohms respectively. Find the EMF generated. SHUNT WOUND DC GENERATOR
In a shunt wound generator, the
field winding is connected across the armature winding forming a parallel or shunt circuit. Therefore, full terminal voltage is applied across the field winding. EXAMPLE 2
The no-load voltage of a 50-kW, 220, shunt generator is 232 V
and the rated load voltage is 220V. The armature resistance including brushes is 0.026 ohm and the resistance of the shunt field resistance is 52 ohms. What is the induced electromagnetic force rated at load? EXAMPLE 3
The field current of a 180kW, 250V DC shunt
Generator is 6A when running full load at rated terminal voltage. If the combined armature and brush resistance is 0.02 ohm, solve for the electrical efficiency of the generator. EXAMPLE 4
A shunt generator supplies 100A at 220V. The armature
and shunt resistances are 0.025 ohms and 100 ohms respectively. If the copper losses are equal to the iron losses at this load, find the brake horsepower of the engine driving the generator. EXAMPLE 5
A 20kW, 200V shunt generator is operated at rated
load. If the driving engine is developing 30hp, determine the iron and friction losses. Armature resistance is 0.05 ohm and shunt field resistance is 50 ohms.
