Group 4

Respiratory System
Respiratory System

 a group of specialized organs dedicated to the exchange of oxygen

and carbon dioxide.

 means to have circulatory system which is transporting the respi-

ratory gases around the body.
Parts of Respiratory System
Nose
- make up the first portion of the
upper respiratory tract.
Nasal Cavity
- serve as a vent for
air exchange
Sinuses
- a cavity within a bone or other tissue, especially
one in the bones of the face or skull connecting with
the nasal cavities.
Mouth
- the mouth is an oval-shaped cavity
inside the skull.

- it is the first portion of the alimentary

canal that receives food and produces
saliva.
Two main Functions
- Eating
- Speaking
Pharynx
- Greek word: THROAT

- Divided into three regions according to location:

the nasopharynx, the oropharynx, and
the laryngopharynx.
Nasopharynx
- the upper part of the pharynx, connecting with
the nasal cavity above the soft palate.

Oropharynx
- middle compartment of the pharynx; it is the
region of the throat between the nasopharynx
(top compartment) and hypopharynx (bottom
compartment).

Laryngopharynx
- can be found between the hyoid bone and the
larynx and esophagus, which helps guide food
and air where to go.
Larynx
- the voice box

- houses the vocal folds, and

manipulates pitch and volume
TRACHEA
• It is a tube-like structure within the neck and
upper chest. It transports air to and from the
lungs when a person breathes.

• Also called windpipe.

Parts of Trachea
• cricoid cartilage
• tracheal cartilages
• Mucosa
Diaphragm
- It is the primary muscle used in respiration,
which is the process of breathing.
- It is a large ,dome-shaped muscle located at the
base of the lungs.

Parts of Diaphragm
- Caval haitus
- Central tendon
- Sternal attachment
- Oesophageal haitus
- Aortic haitus
- Vertebral attachement
Bronchial tubes
- the bronchial tubes are sometimes
referred to as bronchi or airways.

- these tubes let air in and out of

your lungs, so you can breathe.
Lungs
- the lungs are a pair of breathing or-
gans located with the chest which re-
move carbon dioxide from and bring
oxygen to the blood. There is a right
and left lung.
Bronchioles
- are air passages inside the lungs that branch off like tree limbs from the bronchi
—the two main air passages into which air flows from the trachea (windpipe)
after being inhaled through the nose or mouth. The bronchioles deliver air to
tiny sacs called alveoli where oxygen and carbon dioxide are exchanged.Bron-
chioles also warm, moisten and clean the inspired air and distribute it the gas ex-
change zone of lung.

- There are as many 30,000 tiny bronchioles in each lung

Alveoli
- is an important part of the respiratory system whose function it is
to exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide molecules to and from the
bloodstream.
