Laser Alignment

A technology that uses

lasers to align a shaft
centre line to the connected
shaft centre line, so that
there is no angularity or
off-set between the shafts
after job completion.

Reliability Engineering and Diagnostic Solutions
Job Setup

 Connect up brackets and supports to

shaft
 Tighten all connections so that no
movement is possible in the brackets

3
Reliability Engineering and Diagnostic Solutions
Job Setup

 Slide Lasers onto

bracket poles, and
tighten laser heads
so no movement is
possible
 Keep any cables
free from getting
caught in the
brackets

Job setup

 Do the same with laser

receivers

Alignment Procedure

 Know which machine is

stationary, and which
will move
 Start entering
dimensions (feet to
feet, laser to foot etc),
as prompted
 Onscreen arrows prompt
user to navigate to next
step

Alignment Procedure

 Continue entering
prompted fields

7
Reliability Engineering and Diagnostic Solutions
Best Practices

 At this point it is always good

to do a soft foot check, many
systems offer this feature,
however the best method is still
a clock gauge on each foot of
the movable machine. Simple
loosen and tighten each foot to
see if soft foot condition
exists.

Alignment Procedure

 Switch on lasers and

Adjust laser and
receiver so that laser
is in centre of
receiver target, or as
close as possible.

9

Alignment Procedure

 Once dimensions are

complete, turn laser
through partial
sweep or if possible
a full rotation
 Most laser systems
these days offer
partial sweep to as
little as 30 degrees

Alignment Results

 Once sweep is
completed see
results of machine
vertical and
horizontal
misalignment.

Live Results

 Most lasers today

have “Live Move”
capabilities, this is
when you can view
the machine live as
you move it
 Use good quality
pre-cut stainless
steel shims to shim
the machine

12
Reliability Engineering and Diagnostic Solutions
Best Practices

 It is always good
practice to take
another set of
readings to ensure
the results of the
post test confirm
the alignment
