ABOUT THE
MOVIE
• The Movie talks about the Rashomon Effect which occurs when two
parties witness an incident and they provide a competing testimonial to
prove themselves right.
• The movie also shows us a incident where 4 different stories/perspective
were presented ahead and the candidate presenting always tried to
prove they were the innocent one.
• Talking about the themes- Rashomon is a movie based on the element of
Trust/Truth/Storytelling.
• The Movie is also framed in such a way that the person watching the
movie
starts involving himself in the scenes turning it into a reality picture.
THEMES AND
SYMBOLS
• Trust – Movie talks about how people tend to lose faith in
Humanity/Spirituality/Truth. One Incident – Different Stories make it difficult
to arrive at a right conclusion.
• Truth – The very first line – “I don’t understand, I just Don’t understand”
shows
us the movie doesn’t progress until truth/stories start popping out.
• Storytelling – The Rashomon movie can be presented in any of the form –
Art, literature, theatre because everyone in the movie was a medium to
present their own story. The storytelling part gives a lot more exposure to
the character of the person telling the story instead of the actual incident.
• Symbols –
1. Sun – We are about to enter a scene full of fake facts.
2. Jungle – Less Number of Witness and hence easy to play the blame
game.
3. Baby – Tries to restore the faith in humanity by showing the woodcutter
take the baby
3 EXCERPTS FROM THE
MOVIE
• Spirit of the Dead Samurai – This part was something where we
couldn’t
related ourselves with.
• Adaption – How characters inside the movie are easily adapted to
the situations/conclusions.
• No Exact Conclusion – The end objective about what happened in
the jungle was still to be discovered.
Doesn’t Match Because
– Lack of Transparency
Practically Not possible
Different perspectives
RITUAL VIEW
OF
COMMUNICATIO
NSun. This is a part where it the
• Initially Symbolic Approach was used –
camera faces toward the sun which implies that the audience would be
falling in imaginary aspect instead of factual aspect. As the sun forces a
person to close their eyes, the same way every character in the story is
busy forcing everyone to believe them by stating fake information.
• Jungle – The place was used for some special purpose. This place is
different from the outside world and hence is a perfect fit for the story
telling phase. Less number of witness available here.
• Baby – At last there was feeling which shows that people can still place
their faith in humanity.
COMMUNITIES EVIDENT IN
THE
MOVIE
1. Samurai – He came from a high class of society where self respect and
dignity mattered the most

2. Priest– Belonged to a kind of society wherein one believes for everyone to be truthful and
faithful in nature.

3. Commoner – Always sticks between dilemmas and has day to day struggles and
problems in their life.
3 PLACES WHERE
COMMUNICATION
WAS IMPORTANT
• Woodcutter’s Speech in the courtroom- The woodcutter could have said
the same thing in the courtroom which he said outside. This would have
helped in gaining some transparency as the Woodcutter had nothing to
do with the entire scene, possibility could have been that he is speaking
the truth.
• The Wife’s Reply – Every story except the Wife’s story implied that the wife
ran way from the scene despite whatever the case be. The defensive
reply to this in courtroom could have been useful.
• The end conclusion – If there would have been more communication in
the courtroom after observing every story, there was a slight possibility
that the scene could have derived a conclusion.
