Models of Communication Process

A. Linear Communication
• One-way communication
•Focus only on the transmission of a
message
•No response or feedback
•The process stops after the message has
arrived at its destination
SHANNON-WEAVER MODEL
Claude Shannon and
What is the model about?
Warren Weaver
 Known as the mother of all
communication models, the
Shannon-Weaver model (1949)
depicts communication as a linear
or one-way process consisting of
five elements: a source (producer
of message); a transmitter
(encoder of message into signals);
a channel (signals adapted for
transmission); a receiver (decoder
of message from the signal); and
a destination.
SHANNON-WEAVER MODEL
SHANNON-WEAVER MODEL
Give an example of communicative
situation that applies Shannon-Weaver
Model.
B. INTERACTIVE
• Is a two-way communication process
• A response is given after a message is sent. The
receiver intentionally or unintentionally gives
feedback
• Communication signal is determined by
experience.
WILBUR SCHRAMM'S MODEL
TRANSACTIONAL MODEL

Dean C. Barlund What is this model about?

 Barnlund (1970)
proposed a transactional
model of communication.
The basic premise of the
transactional model of
communication is
dynamic that individuals
are simultaneously
engaging in the sending
and receiving of
messages.
TRANSACTION MODEL

Dean C. Barlund What is this model about?

 Transaction Model is a two

way process with the inclusion
of feedback as one element.
This model is more interactive.
There is a collaborative
exchange of messages between
communicators with the aim of
understanding each other. It
also shows that a barrier, such
as noise, may interfere with
the flow of communication.
