Review of Previous Lesson
Can anyone tell me what is this cell organelle?

• It’s a chloroplasts...

Photosynthesis occurs in chloroplasts an organelle

in plant cell that contains chlorophyll. It is
responsible in converting light energy into relatively
stable chemical energy via the photosynthetic
process.
What part of the chloroplast is responsible for the absorption of light?

• The chlorophyll

It is a green pigment found in cyanobacteria and all green plants that absorbs light to generate energy for
photosynthesis

What is light reaction?...
• Light reaction is the first stage of photosynthesis process in which solar energy is converted into
chemical energy in the form of ATP and NADPH.

• Light-dependent reaction is jargon for certain photochemical reactions that is involved in

photosynthesis, the main process by which plants acquire energy. It happens only in thylakoid
(membrane-bound compartments inside chloroplasts)

• These processes transform the solar energy into chemical energy (ATP and NADPH). The photosynthesis
process is carried out by the photosystem, which receives energy from the sun through the chlorophyll in plants
PHOTOSYSTEM
S
• Photosystems are functional units for
photosynthesis. Defined by a particular
pigment organization and association patterns,
whose work is to absorb and transfer light
energy.

• Physically photosystems are found in the

thylakoid membranes. There are two distinct
photosystems in chloroplasts. These two are
normally linked in series and they transfer
electrons from water to NADP+ to form
NADPH, with the concomitant production of a
transmembrane electrochemical proton gradient

• Photosystem II (PS II) is a • Photosystem I is an integral

pigment-protein complex in membrane protein complex that
thylakoid membranes from all uses light energy to catalyze the
oxygenic photosynthetic transfer of electrons across the
organism. It catalyzes the light- thylakoid membrane from
induced reduction of plastocyanin to ferreoxin.
plastoquinone by water through a
number of redox reactions
STEPS IN LIGHT DEPENDENT REACTION

There are three steps in light dependent reaction that shows how do electrons and other materials
flow during light reaction process

• STEP 1: Excitation of Electron in Photosystems by Light Energy

• STEP 2 : Production of ATP via an Electron Transport Chain

• STEP 3 : Reduction of NADP+ and the Photolysis of Water

STEP 1: THE EXCITATION OF ELECTRON IN PHOTOSYNTHESIS
BY LIGHT ENERGY
• Photosystems are groups of photosynthetic pigments
including chlorophyll embedded within the thylakoid
membrane.

• Photosystem are classified according to their maximal

absorption wavelengths (PS I = 700nm ; PS II = 680 nm)

• When a photosystem absorbs light energy, delocalized

electrons within the pigments become energized or “excited”.

• These excited electrons are transferred to carrier molecules

within the thylakoid membrane.
STEP 3: REDUCTION OF NADP+ AND THE PHOTOLYSIS OF WATER

• Excited electron from Photosystem I may be transferred to a carrier molecule and used to reduced
NADP+

• This forms NADPH, which is needed (in conjunction with ATP) for the light independent reactions

• The electrons lost from Photosystem I are replaced by de-energized electrons from Photosystem II

• The electrons lost from Photosystem II are replaced by electrons released from water via photolysis

• Water is split by light energy into H+ ions (used in chemiosmosis) and oxygen (released as a by-
product)
