Writing a Report
• any account, spoken or written, of the matters concerning a
particular topic
• a concise piece of writing that uses facts and evidence to look at
issues, situations, events, or findings
What are information reports and why do we write
them?

Information report:

is written to classify and describe factual information about a


certain topic or theme
is a factual text which provides information in an organized and
objective way, without analysis or recommendations
provides facts, data, feedback, and other types of information

Example: Annual reports, progress reports, statement of policies and


procedures, etc.
What structure is needed in an informational
report?
Introduction
• Overview
• A brief outline of the subtopics within the report
• A hook
Body
Each body paragraph focuses on its own subtopic:
• Subheading
• Topic sentence
• Details & examples
Body paragraphs should be ordered logically
Conclusion
• Summarize what the reader has learned
• No new information
What are the main language features?
The main language features
• Language of generalization
• Language of description
• Language of comparison/contrast
• Facts & no opinions
• Typical grammar:
Passive voice
Present simple
III person
Conjunctions
• Technical vocabulary
• Visual information
Oral Report
Any objective presentation of facts and their interpretation using spoken words.
It ranges from brief school/status reports to extended reports delivered to a
large audience.
The speaker expects to speak without interruption for a certain about of time.
The audience expects useful, timely information in an ordered way.
How to Give an Oral Report
• Written preparation is highly recommended/should be involved
• Organization and clarity are the key ingredients of a solid presentation
• Default towards brevity
• Address the audience directly. Have a strong opening. Why should the audience
listen to you? 
• Maintain a logical flow
• Emphasize and reiterate what you want your audience to remember
• Use your conclusion to convey gratitude and repeat your main point

• Choose one person who will report back to the class
