What do you mean by
wireless sensor networks?
• wireless
• No wired connection
• sensor
• Is used to Acquire/Collect data
• Is used to measure the value/quantity
• To detect events or changes
• Networks
• A network consists of
• two or more computers/devices
• that are linked
• in order to share resources (such as printers and CDs),
• exchange files, or allow electronic communications.
Network Type 2
Network Type 1

Wireless Networks
• Two types
• Infrastructure-based
Infrastructure-less
Infrastructure-based
• Relies on fixed infrastructure
• Base Stations or Access points are fixed and centralized
• Eg: WLANs, cellular networks
• Homogeneous
• Consist of nodes having similar characteristics
• E.g.: Networked formed of only smartphones
• Heterogeneous
• Consists of nodes with different capabilities
• E.g.: Networked formed of PCs, smart phones and tablets
Key points learnt
• Ad-Hoc network is
• Infrastructure-less network
• No fixed infrastructure – E.g.., Bluetooth, mobile Hotspot etc.,
• Dynamic Topology
• Multi-hopping – no direct source to destination connection
• Receives information from peer nodes/devices
• Used for immediate purpose
• No previous planning
• Used for disaster or relief operations
• Homogeneous and Heterogeneous types are available
