FUNCTIONS OF ART

 Personal ( utilitarian, public displays, expression)


 Social ( used for public display and celebration, used to affect the
collective behavior)
 Physical ( Utilitarian)
Arts functions can be classified into two;

- The Directly functional art


• Refers to art that we use in our daily lives
- Indirectly functional art
• Refers to an arts that are “Perceived through the
senses”
 Directly Functional Art
> Refers to art that we use in our daily lives such as;

• tools,architectural structures,roads, bridges, buildings, furniture, kitchen


utensils, coins, bills, dress, weapon etc.

 IndIrectly Functional Arts


> Refers to an arts that are “Perceived through the senses”
• fine arts, painting, music, sculpture, dance, literary pieces, theatrical
performance
 Personal Function of Art
- It is a work of art that make us aware of other way of
thinking,feeling, and imagining that have never occured
to us before.
- Art are vehicles for the artists expression of their
feelings and ideas. The art also serve as means of
expression to us.
Social Function of arts
• Art is considered to have a social
function when it addresses a particular
collective interest as opposed to a
personal interest.
•It is an art that go beyond personal
intrinsic value to art’s social benefits.
Physical function of art

• The physical function of art can be found


in artworks that are crafted in order to
serve some physical purpose.
Examples; Architecture, jewelry-making,
interior design, wood working and industrial
design are all serves in physical functions.
