Respiratory diseases

BY YASMINE GYAN
Three groups of respiratory diseases

 Respiratory diseases can be discussed under three groups:

1.)Airway diseases
2.)lung diseases
3.)neuromuscular diseases
Airway diseases

 Most airway diseases are caused by bacteria and viruses.

Some examples are: tracheitis, bronchitis and bronchiolitis.
Examples and their meanings

 Tracheitis: infection of the windpipe

 Bronchitis:infection of the bronchi causing them to
become inflamed or irritated
 Bronchiolitis:
infection in the bronchioles that is mostly
common in children and infants.
Symptoms of airway diseases

 fever
 Difficulty in breathing
 Pain when coughing
 Pertussis(whooping cough )
Prevention

They can be avoided by:

 Covering your mouth or by avoiding contact with other
people so you don’t inhale bacteria or viruses from others
who are coughing.
Treatment

 They
are treated by giving anti bacteria medications or by
immunization in children for pertussis.
Asthma

Asthma is a chronic condition that affects the airways of the

lungs but it isn’t caused by infection. It is caused by allergic
reaction which the person is born with. It can be provoked by
cold weather, catarrh, vigorous exercise and inhaling dust.
Asthma can be prevented by avoiding known precipitation
agents such as dust and smoke.
It can be treated by using anti allergy medication.
Lung Disease:

Pneumonia and covid -19 are some examples of lung

diseases and the treatment is also antibiotic depending on
which type of germ causing it.
Symptoms include: fever, chest pain, fatigue, difficulty in
breathing, shortness of breath etc.
Pneumoconiosis
 Another group of lung diseases are caused by inhaling dust
particles such as sand, cotton particles ,coal and also caused by
smoking. These diseases are called pneumoconiosis. They can be
prevented by : wearing a nose mask and washing hands
thoroughly before drinking , eating or taking in medications.
 It
is recommended that people working around coal mines should
wear a special protective mask when working.
Symptoms of pneumoconiosis

 Symptoms are: cough, difficulty in breathing. But no

fever and no chest pain. Sometimes the cough brings up
sputum that is colored black.
 NOTE THAT: pneumoconiosis does not have a cure. The
treatment giving is aimed at keeping it from getting worse
and controlling the symptoms.
Neuromuscular disease

 They are diseases that affect the muscle that aid

respiration. These diseases paralysis the diaphragm and
chest muscles.
 Snake bites, scorpion bites and some spider bites poison
the muscle and cause serious respiratory diseases.
 Other causes of muscle paralysis are motor neuron
disease and spinal chord diseases.
Symptoms of Neuromuscular diseases

 Some symptoms are: muscle weakness, trouble breathing

and trouble swallowing.
