ASIAN REGIONALISM

ASIA

• Term that originated from the west, particularly in ancient Greece.


• Asia has the biggest population of at least two thirds of the worlds inhabitants.
Probably because the continent comprises the one third of the world’s land
mass.
• One of the fastest emerging and developing region.
ASIA

• Most of the countries wants collaboration with most of the East Asian countries
because of the economic and political growth in this region started to shape up.
• As a result US strategically takes care of it’s allies in Asia to maintain and
further enhance its supply of raw materials, human technological skills and
even military force.
• EUROPE keeps strong relationship to expand it’s growing business in the field
of medical science and research.
RESPECT

• Makes the Asian countries stronger that ever.


• For one, the ASEAN as a regional bloc, pays full respect for sovereignty and
independence of its members.
REGIONALIZATION

• The growth of societal integration within a region and to the often undirected
process of social and economic interaction that happens only in a SPECIFIC
GEOGRAPICAL REGION.
• Political process by economic policy if cooperation and coordination are
present among countries.
• Focuses more of the TRADE.
REGIONALISM

• Process of intergovernmental collaborations between states.


ASIAN REGIONALISM

• New concept among continental communities


• The cooperation and collaboration of goals. It has ASEAN and failed EAST
ASIA ECONOMIC GROUP.
ASEAN THREE PILLARS

-POLITICAL SECURITY COMMUNITY- gives importance to human rights,


drugs, foreign relations, defense, law and transnational crime.
-ECONOMIC COMMUNITY- investment areas, transportation, agriculture,
forestry.
-SOCIO-CULTURAL COMPANY-avenue for cooperation among ministers
responsible for culture and arts, sports, disaster management, education,
environment, health information, labor, rural development, and poverty
eradication, women, youth and civil service matters.
ASEAN + 3

• ASEAN countries partnered with 3 east Asian countries- CHINA, JAPAN and
South Korea.
ASPECTS TO A GREATER ASIAN
INTEGRATION

• Integration is market driven.


• Formal institutions were established- Asian Development Bank
• Economic Grants and overseas development assistance were made available
• Production networks have expanded.
• Establishment of two Economic Structures- 1.Chiang Mai initiative and
2.Asian Bond Markets Initiatives, that aims to strengthen policy dialogue,
coordination and collaboration on common financial, monetary and fiscal
issues.
• ASEAN follows consensus rule as an approach to decision making. – that
prevents collision of cultural beliefs and economic policies .
ASIAN DEVELOPMENT BANK

• Established by Asian countries that works in form of loans, grants and


information sharing on topics such as terrorism and regional security.
ASEAN DECLARATION AIMS AND
PURPOSES

• To accelerate economic growth, social progress and cultural development in the


region.
• To promote regional peace and stability.
• Promote active collaboration and mutual assistance
• Provide assistance to each other in the form of training and research facilities.
• Collaborate more effectively for the utilization of their agriculture and industries.
• Expand trade, improve transportation and communication facilities and raise living
standards of its people.
• Promote southeast Asian studies maintain close and beneficial cooperation.
