Computers

What is a Computer?
A computer is one of the most brilliant
inventions of mankind. Thanks to the computer
technology, we were able to achieve storage
and processing of huge amounts of data; we
could rest our brains by employing computer
memory capacities for storing information. Due
to computers, we have been able to speed up
daily work, carry out critical transactions and
achieve accuracy and precision in work.
What is a Computer?
Being a modern-day kid you must have used,
seen, or read about computers. This is because
they are an integral part of our everyday
existence. Be it school, banks, shops, railway
stations, hospital or your own home, computers
are present everywhere, making our work
easier and faster for us. As they are such
integral parts of our lives, we must know what
they are and how they function.
What is a Computer?
In this lesson, you will have a great deal in
understanding computer and its basic
operation. At the end of this lesson, you will be
able to apply the knowledge of the classification
of computer, the types of computer that used
nowadays, the type of personal computers and
the operation of the computer on how it works
as a system.

Electronic
Data
Processing
What you input into a computer is
called data, and then it will be
transformed into useful
information. The process that
makes data into its useful form is
called electronic data processing or
EDP.
The Electronic Data Processing Cycle

INPUT PROCESS OUTPUT

STORAGE
Input
It refers to all activities associated with
recording data and making it available
for processing. It presents the process
of transforming data into a form that a
computer understands.
Processing
After the data is recorded and
converted into an appropriate form, it
must be processed. Processing
includes different arithmetic and
logical operations such as classifying,
sorting, summarizing, comparing and
other manipulation techniques that
convert data into information.
Output
Data processing converts data into
information that will be transmitted to
the users of information. The result of
the process is called output.
Storage
The storage device contains the
processed data for future use. A
storage device is a hardware
component of a computer that
permanently stores data

Hardware
Hardware is the physical aspect of
computers that you can actually
touch. Hardware includes not only
the physical computer but also the
cables, connectors, power supply
unit, and peripheral devices such as
the keyboard, mouse, audio
speakers and printers.
Software

This is the non-tangible

program now known as
software.
Peopleware

This refers to the developers

and users of the computer
system hardware and
software.
Definition of Computer
- Computer are machines that
perform a specific task or
calculations depending on the set of
instructions, or programs.
- Computer is a programmable
machine that can store, retrieve,
and process data.
