Q. Discuss Gail’s main business operations, its CSR programme, and the Saksham programme.

Ans.
 GAIL’S MAIN BUSINESS
o Natural gas
o Liquid hadron carbons
o LPG production & transmission
o Petochemicals
o City gas distribution

 CSR PROGRAMME:

The majority of GAIL's CSR projects are carried out in and around its main work locations and
cover a broad spectrum of welfare and development activities stretching across numerous
priority areas. GAIL Hriday is one of its CSR umbrellas (Corporate with Heart).
 SAKSHAM PROGRAMME:

Over 1400 kids received infrastructure help and audio-visual aids in the most recent fiscal year. The Air
Force Wives Welfare Association, which runs and supports Umeed Asha Kiran schools for children with
special needs, received financial assistance. At the Deaf and Mute school at Belagumba, Tumkur, Tumkur
District, Karnataka, new housing and a dining hall kitchen were constructed. In addition, GAIL has helped
almost 700 people with disabilities by organising 2 distribution camps in collaboration with the Artificial
Limbs Manufacturing Corporation of India.
Q. Should Saksham be considered a CSR initiative. Why and why not?

Ans: Gas Authority of India Limited (GAIL), one of India's largest public sector companies, offers
low-income communities that could be impacted by GAIL's business operations special training in
the skills needed for the plastic industry through its "Saksham" corporate social responsibility
(CSR) programme. The Saksham programme meets the needs of one of GAIL's primary clients,
the small and medium scale plastic industry, as opposed to a conventional GAIL CSR initiative,
which focuses on areas immediately impacted by GAIL's operations. It provide employement to the
needy students of smaller communities

o Promote education
o Also provide skilled employees
Q. Consider various reasons for why companies in general might undertake CSR programmes. Discuss
whether Saksham programme would fit into any of those general motivations for CSR.

Ans. SOME CSR PROGRAMMES:

 Innovation – I know, I know, it’s an over-used term. Just typing the word into Amazon will bring up nearly
150,000 items. But in the context of CSR, innovation is a huge benefit to a company and society.

 Cost savings. Many simple changes in favour of sustainability, such as using less packaging, will help to
decrease your production costs.

 Brand differentiation – In the past, brand differentiation was one of the primary reasons companies
embraced CSR. Companies such as Timberland were able to find their voice and incorporate the
company’s values into their business model. However, as CSR has become more commonplace, using it to
differentiate your brand is getting harder to do.

 More benefits for employees. There are also a range of benefits for your employees when you embrace
CSR. Your workplace will be a more positive and productive place to work, and by promoting things like
volunteering, you encourage personal and professional growth.
The Saksham Group's objectives include providing accessible and assistive technologies, providing skill training
through on-the-job training, fostering inclusive workplaces and ergonomics, preparing individuals for the 5s
and life skills, and hiring people with disabilities (Persons with Disability).

One of the main goals of the programme is to give assistive equipment to people with motor disabilities by
offering day-long assistance with limb fitting, calliper fitting, walking aid provision, elbow crutches, and other
items. Another important aspect of the programme is the support and facilitation of skills development and
employment. The beneficiaries are receiving all of these services at no cost.

Programme has also won National CSR Award 2019 conferred by Honourable Minister of Finance and
Corporate Affairs Ms. Nirmala Sitharaman in the presence of the President of India.
Q. Critically analyse the idea of strategic CSR. If CSR is aimed at fulfilling corporate responsibilities towards
society, is strategic CSR beneficial to society?

Ans. The traditional definition of CSR is to work for philanthropy, or to contribute to the advancement of
society. A change in CSR, requiring it to be strategically planned, resulted from changes in the corporate
environment.
Philanthropy
Strategic
Stick to core operation of organisation
CSR
Gain competitive edge over compatitors

When CSR is carried out for philanthropic purposes while keeping in mind how to acquire a competitive edge
and adhere to an organization's basic values, it is considered strategic CSR. Consider GAIL Saksham 30.A
training programme was created to help kids strengthen their skills. But stay with GAIL's primary business, the
polymer sector. As a result, strategic CSR satisfies both social duty and the demands of the marketplace.

Strategic CSR is killing two birds with one stone.
