Run-On Sentences
Definition
 Run-on sentences occur when two or more independent clauses
are improperly joined. (We talked about clauses in Parts of a
Sentence.)
One type of run-on sentences that you've probably heard of is the
comma splice, in which two independent clauses are joined by a
comma without a coordinating conjunction (and, or, but, etc.).

• A run-on sentences is a grammatically mistake
•A sentence fragment and a run-on sentence are not the same. A
sentence fragment does not include one or more of the necessary
elements to make a full sentence, whereas a run-on sentence has
too many elements in one sentence.
Examples
• walked to school today (no subject)
• she at the store (no verb)

transitional expression in the middle of a sentence
• Tofix this type of comma splice, use a semicolon before the
transitional expression and add a comma after it.
Examples

research needs to be done on the topic.

• The word polysyndeton comes from the Greek sundetos, which
means ‘’bound together’’
• The definition of polysyndeton is the repeated use of
coordinating conjunction to connect different items in a
sentence.

Ways to Correct Run on Sentences
A run-on sentence can be fixed by connecting its parts correctly. There
are several ways to connect independent clauses.
• Use a period
• Use a semicolon
• Use a comma
• Use subco-ordinating conjunction

12

By Period
• To make two separate sentences out of a run-on, put a period at the end
of the first main clause and begin the second main clause with a capital
letter
• Inserting
a period at the end of the first main clause is often the best
way to correct a long run-on sentence.
Example
 Merdine is a skilled carpenter she single-handedly built a two-story log
cabin.
 Merdine is a skilled carpenter . She single-handedly built a two-story
log cabin.

By Semicolon
• Inserting a semicolon between independent clauses creates a
grammatically correct sentence. Using a semicolon is a stylistic
choice that establishes a close relationship between the two
sentences.
Example
• Humor is a rubber sword it allows you to make a point without
drawing blood.
• Humor is a rubber sword ; it allows you to make a point without
drawing blood.

By Comma
• A comma, paired with a coordinating conjunction (e.g., "and,"
"but," or "or"), corrects a run-on sentence. This method
emphasizes the relationship between the two clauses.
Example
•  I
love to write papers I would write one every day if I had the
time.
•Ilove to write papers, and I would write one every day if I
had the time.

Coordinating Conjunction
•  Acoordinating conjunction is a conjunction that connects two
grammatical elements of identical construction. The seven
coordinating conjunctions are: for, and, nor, but, or, yet, and so. If
you need help remembering them, just think of them as
your FANBOYS
Example
• Tommy is afraid of his cousin Angelica she is always mean to him.
