Introduction :
Necessity of joint :

 Joint allows movement to prevent stress

buildup.
  To minimize any desirable cracking .
 To improve the performance of the structure
material and allow the materials to expand
freely.
 It separates the structure into smaller units.
Type of joints :

1. Construction joints
2. Control joints
3. Expansion joints
4. Settlement joints
Construction joint :

The simplest movement joints are working construction

joints. They are used throughout the construction of
buildings to allow for materials to move without
creating distress.
An example of a working construction joint would be a
shingle roof, which is made up of small units of
materials that overlap so that they allow for thermal or
moisture movement without causing damage to the
shingles.
Control joint :

Control joints are typically used in masonry construction to

control cracking due to material shrinkage. When concrete
masonry surfaces shrink, control joints expand to prevent
cracking.Typically, control joints are filled with mortar with a
bond breaker on one side to avoid tensile strength development .
Expansion joint :

The expansion joint depends upon the context of the change of

temperature. These joints are provided when the length of the
building is greater than 30m and temperature changes by 50 c
then a 10 mm expansion joint is provided . Then extent of the
structure on the coefficient of the linear expansion of the
material .
settlement joint :

are created to avoid stress from different rates of foundation

settlement.
This settlement usually occurs between different portions of a
building or between portions of a building that bear on different
soils.
Joints also can be classified according to the materials used:

• Solid joints
• Veneer joints
• Flexible joints

kinds of profiles. They are
adjustable to joint movements.
Flexible Joints :

Materials that perform impermeability all the time

by adjusting structure movements. This type of
materials can perform too much deformation and
contraction.
