▰ Sleep Quality – classification of an individual’s quality of sleep (good or poor),

identified through different characteristics of sleep or measured through a
sleep quality index.
▰ Subjective Sleep Quality - individual's satisfaction with their sleep.
▰ Sleep Duration - length of time that an individual sleeps.
▰ Sleep Latency - time it takes for an individual to fall asleep after turning off
the lights.
▰ Sleep Disturbances - internal or external distractions that hinders sleep.

▰ Daytime Dysfunction - inability to fully function during the day due to poor
sleep quality or insufficient duration of sleep.
▰ Poor Sleeper – an individual who practice poor sleeping habits and
subjectively describes own sleep quality as not satisfactory.
▰ Good Sleeper - an individual who practice good sleeping habits and
subjectively describes own sleep quality as satisfactory.
▰ Sleeping Habits – acts an individual does prior to sleep or actions done to
maintain sleep quality.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The main objective of the study was to analyze the sleep quality of
tertiary education students through a sleep quality index. Furthermore,
results of the study supported the crafted guidelines to improve the
students’ sleep quality. Specifically, the study resulted to:

 Determined sleep quality of tertiary education students in terms of

the components of Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), subjective
sleep quality, sleep latency, sleep duration, sleep efficiency, sleep
disturbance, use of sleep medication, and daytime dysfunction.

 Crafted guidelines on sleeping habits to promote overall quality of

health and well-being.

SUMMARY OF FINDINGS

 Most of the tertiary education students in FCPC are “poor sleepers”.

 Most of the college students indicated a Fairly Good Subjective
Sleep Quality.
 Most of the college students’ sleep latency is 16-30 minutes.
 Most of the college students’ sleep duration is 6-7 hours.
 In Terms of Sleep Efficacy
 Usual Bedtime is 12:00 am - 3:00 am.
 Usual Getting up Time is 5:30 am - 8:00 am.
 College students’ most encountered sleep disturbance was
caused by waking up in the middle of the night or early
morning. CENTER FOR RESEARCH,
DEVELOPMENT AND INNOVATION
SUMMARY OF FINDINGS

 Majority are not using sleep medications.

 In Terms of Daytime Dysfunction
 Most of the college students had not experienced
trouble staying awake during daily activities.
 Most of the college students indicated keeping up
enthusiasm was only a very slight problem.
 Proposed Guidelines on Sleeping Habits were Crafted to
Promote Overall Quality of Health and Well-being.

CENTER FOR RESEARCH,

CONCLUSION

▰ The sleep quality of college students’ sample population

(115) do not represent the whole population of Tertiary
Education Department (TED), thus represents only the
students who participated in the study.
▰ Only the overall PSQI Global Score served as the basis to
determine the sleep quality of tertiary education department,
as the scores per component are significant to yield the total
score of PSQI, only the Global Score determines good and
poor sleepers which ascertain the sleep quality overall.

CENTER FOR RESEARCH,

DEVELOPMENT AND INNOVATION
RECOMMENDATION

 Propose the crafted guidelines on sleeping habits to the

First City Providential College Administration upon
validation of Dean, Program Heads, and Instructors from
the College of Allied Medical Sciences, referral to other
medical professionals maybe accepted, if possible.
 Offer the guidelines to the tertiary education department
(TED) and basic education department (BED) thru the
Guidance Services Office.
 Referral of students with severe difficulty on sleep to
Guidance Services Office to offer counseling services, if
appropriate.
CENTER FOR RESEARCH,
DEVELOPMENT AND INNOVATION
RECOMMENDATION

 Reassess students who appeared to have severe difficulty

on maintaining sleep or poor sleep quality using the
standardized Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), which
was obtained from remote data gathering.
 Referral of the students with poor sleep quality to the
School Clinic to be assessed for possible complications
that may have been attained due to poor sleep quality, if
appropriate.
