What is a Persuasive essay ?

• Persuasive writing is any written work that tries to convince the reader of the writer's opinion.
Aside from standard writing skills, a persuasive essay author can also draw on personal
experience, logical arguments, an appeal to emotion, and compelling speech to influence
readers.
• Structure of the Persuasive essay
• This essay is made up of five paragraphs
• Paragraphs- Introduction, body ( 3 paragraphs), conclusion
• Introduction – 3 sentences ; device to draw the reader/ audience’s attention, supporting
information ( optional), thesis statement
• Thesis statement- This is the last sentence in the introduction. The thesis statement is one
sentence where the 3 points to be discussed in the body of the essay is listed
Structure of the persuasive essay (Ditto)

• The body consists of 3 paragraphs

• Each paragraph talks about a different point that was previously
mentioned in the thesis statement. The paragraphs are ordered in the
same way the points are listed
• The conclusion- Summarizes the points mentioned either in two or
three sentences.

• Hyperbole using repetition – I can eat a horse.
• Humor- The actor vroomed his motorcycle over his lover.
• Sarcasm – I’m so happy the teacher gave me all this
homework right before spring break.
• Irony – The teacher handed John back his test paper, “Good
going John !” Only to realize it was an F.
• Ridicule – The boy thought it was laughable to ridicule his
little sister about her braces.
• Anecdote – John was missing his family after he moved
across the country but thanks to Facebook, he could stay
connected?

 Persuasive Essay:
Why do bullies try to intimidate others? 7% increase in the number of students who prey and exploit
others. This is now a growing issue that is a cause for serious alarm. Some major issues are increased
rates in suicide, bullies shouldn't be disregarded, possession of a certain level unawareness of actions.
Bullies can cause an increase in suicidal rates by peer pressuring other students. This can lead to a
lower self-esteem; it is a serious cause of depression. Continuous harassment and victimization for one
to kill him or herself. Kids who are bullied can experience negative physical, social, emotional,
academic, and mental health issues.
