L4: Melting, freezing and

subliming
W.A.L.T: Understand the differences
between melting, freezing and subliming.

Starter:
What do you see in the
picture?
Solid to liquid
• The change from solid to liquid is called
melting When solids melt its particles move out of their
……………………..
orderered pattern.
………………..
particles
• The ……………………… start to move around and
the particle arrangement changes all the time.
melting
The temperature that something melts is called its …………………
point.

Look at the diagrams below and

describe how the particles
change during melting.
Using melting points.
• Look at the data below, what can you say
about the melting points of each substance?

• Scientists use melting point to identify

different substances because pure substances
have unique melting points.
Melting point apparatus.
• If the substance is pure,
the melting point will
be constant. If the
substance melts over a
range a temperatures
then we know that it is
a mixture……………
Explaining melting and freezing point.

• Watch the video on an experiment that shows

how to find the freezing point of stearic acid.

Sublimation
• Some solids turn straight into a gas on heating.
We call this sublimation………….
(It does not turn into a liquid first)
• How are the forces different between the
particles in a solid, liquid and a gas?
Explaining melting and boiling points.
Explaining Boiling points:
• The boiling point of a substances depends on the strength… of
the forces between the particles in the liquid. state. The
stronger the forces, the more energy. is needed to separate
the particles to reach the boiling point.

Explaining melting points:

• When a substance is in its solid state, electrostatic. forces hold
the particles in an ordered pattern
• Energy is needed to overcome these forces to make the solid
melt. The melting point depends on the strength of the
forces. The stronger the forces, the more energy is needed to
melt. the solid. Hence, the …higher… its melting point.
Explaining freezing points.
• Look at the graph and data table.
• What is the freezing point of the stearic
acid?
• What is happening to the particles at
the freezing point?
True/False quiz.
1. Melting point and freezing point occurs at
the same temperature.
2. Mixtures melt at an exact temperature.
3. Use of ‘Dry ice’ is an example of sublimation.

4. Pure ice melts at exactly 0oC.

5. The melting point of mercury is lower than ice.
