different particles. What are atoms?
What are atoms?
• Over 2000 years ago, a Greek philosopher called Democritus
suggested that everything was made up of tiny pieces.
Democritus suggested……….., ifIf you

We now know that atoms really do exist.

Today we can even see large kinds atoms,
using special microscopes called scanning
tunnelling microscopes.

The photograph shows the atoms in

some carbon nanotubes.
(Nano means ‘very, very small’.)
All substances are made of atoms
All substances are made of very tiny particles called atoms.
Many substances are made up of different types of atoms.

They are all found in more different atoms
the Periodic table e.g. C bonded together. e.g CO2
(Carbon), Cu (Copper), Au or H2O
(Gold)
• A mixture is made up of 2 or more
substances that are NOT bonded. e.g. salty
water.
