RESPIRATORY
SYSTEM

2
What is Respiratory System?
 the network of organs and tissues that help you
breathe. It includes your airways, lungs and blood
vessels.

 These parts work together to move oxygen

throughout the body and clean out waste gases like
carbon dioxide.
TAKE NOTE: RESPIRATORY
SYSTEM HELPS THE BODY
MAINTAIN HOMEOSTASIS

Respiratory System

4
Functions of Respiratory System:
 Allows you to talk and to smell.

 Warms air to match your body temperature and moisturizes it to the

humidity level your body needs.

 Delivers oxygen to the cells in your body.

 Removes waste gases, including carbon dioxide, from the body when you
exhale.

 Protects your airways from harmful substances and irritants.

5
The Respiratory System is divided into two main
parts:
 Upper Respiratory Tract: composed of the nose
or nostrils, nasal cavity, mouth, throat
(pharynx), and voice box (larynx).

 Lower Respiratory Tract: composed of windpipe

(trachea) and within the lungs, the bronchi,
bronchioles, and alveoli.

6
Organs of the Upper Respiratory Tract:

 Nose
 Nasal Cavity
 Sinuses
 Pharynx
 Larynx

7
Organs of the Upper Respiratory Tract:

 Nose
 body’s primary organ

of smell

8
Organs of the Upper Respiratory Tract:
 Nasal Cavity:
 Inside of the nose, the sticky
mucous membrane lining the
nasal cavity traps dust
particles, and tiny hairs called
cilia help move them to the
nose to be sneezed or blown
out.

9
Organs of the Upper Respiratory Tract:

 Sinuses:

 are a connected system of

hollow cavities in the skull. The
largest sinus cavities are about
an inch across.
 These air-filled spaces along
side of the nose help make the
skull lighter.

10
Organs of the Upper Respiratory Tract:

 Pharynx
• A muscular, funnel-
shaped passageway
inside the body.
• Also plays a role in
speech

11
Organs of the Upper Respiratory Tract:

 Larynx
 A muscular, funnel-
shaped passageway
inside the body.
 Essential to human
speech.

12
Organs of the Lower Respiratory Tract:

 Trachea
 Lungs
 Bronchi
 Diaphragm

13
Organs of the Lower Respiratory Tract:

 Trachea
 often called the windpipe
 Located below the larynx
 Helps supply air to the
lungs
 Made of smooth muscle and
several c-shaped rings of
cartilage

14
Organs of the Lower Respiratory Tract:
 Lungs
 Are sponge-like organs
that fill the chest cavity
and make up the most
lower respiratory tract.
 One of the largest
organs in the body.
 Divided into lobes

15
Organs of the Lower Respiratory Tract

 Lungs’ Lobes
 Right Lung
 Has three lobes (superior
lobe, middle lobe and
inferior lobe)
 Left Lung
 Has two lobes (superior lobe
and inferior lobe)

16
Organs of the Lower Respiratory Tract:

 Bronchi
 are the large tubes that
connect to your trachea
and direct the air you
breathe to your right
and left lungs.
 Structurally similar to
the trachea

17
Organs of the Lower Respiratory Tract:

 Diaphragm
 Located below the lungs
 Main respiratory muscle
that contracts and
relaxes to allow air into
the lungs.

18
Common Disorders and Diseases of the
Respiratory System:

 Asthma
 Lung Cancer
 Pneumonia
 Tubercolosis

19
Common Disorders and Diseases of the
Respiratory System:
 Asthma
 Chronic inflammation of the lung airways that causes
coughing, wheezing, chest tightness or shortness of breath.
 Caused by constricted airways.
 Allergic Asthma – caused by allergens.

 Lung Cancer
 A type of cancer that begins in the lungs.
 Often associated with smoking.

20
Common Disorders and Diseases of the
Respiratory System:
 Pneumonia
 Causes the smallest parts of the lungs (bronchioles and
alveolar tissue) to become inflamed

 Tubercolosis
 A contagious bacterial infection of the lungs

RECAP
 Respiratory System - the network of organs and tissues that help you
breathe
 Respiratory System helps the body maintain homeostasis
 Respiratory System is divided into two main component
 Lungs is divided into lobes
 The air-filled sacs in the lungs are called alveoli
 Trachea is also called as windpipe
 Bronchi are structurally similar to trachea
 There are as many as 30,000 tiny bronchioles in each lung
 A layer of protective mucus is called a mucus blanket
 Main respiratory muscle that contracts and relaxes to allow air into the
lungs.
