Science 4

Week 1-S4MT-Ia-1
Classify materials
based on the ability
to absorb water,
float, sink and
undergo decay.
Let’s Recall
Choose one picture and name it. Then,
identify what if the following forms of
matter are solid, liquid and gas.
This is a life vest.
.
It is an inflatable
sleeveless jacket worn
to keep a person afloat
when in danger of
drowning.
What special property do life
vest has?

It has the ability to float. Some

things float on the top of water.
EXAMPLE OF
MATERIALS
THAT FLOAT
These are stone. Stones
are solid form of matter.
Stones are usually hard
and rounded in shape.
Stones don’t float in the
water.
What special property do
stone have?
It has the ability to sink. Sink
means to fall to the bottom
of water.
Examples of
materials that sink
These are example of dry
leaves. It is solid form of
matter. Dried leaves are
an abundant source of
organic matter that can
be used for fertilizer in
garden.
Dried leaves have the ability to undergo
decay.

What is decay means?

Decay- to be slowly destroyed into bits in the
presence of water, air and soil. The organic matter
in soil is derived from plants and animals. It
become organic fertilizer.
Example of
materials
that undergo
decay
Sponge is a solid
form of material.
Sponges absorb
liquid and are used
for washing and
cleaning.
What special property do
sponge have?
It has special property to absorb water. It is
called porous materials which mean having
small holes that allow air or liquid to pass
through.
Let’s Try. Identify and choose if the
following materials float or sink.

1. Salvavida
A.SINK
B.FLOAT
2. Rubber boat
a.Sink
b.float
3. Hammer
a.Float
b.Sink
4. Coin
a.Sink
b.float
5. Glass
a.Sink
b.Float
Let’s Do. Classify the following materials
inside the box whether they will decay or
not.

1. Cement 2. Bread 3. Leaves

4. Potato 5. straw
6. Can 7. plastic 8. fruits
Let’s Answer. Write / if the following material
absorb water and x if not.

1.Clothes
2.Sponge
3.Glass
4.Towel
5.Plastic
Let’s Remember.

*Float –it means to stay on top of the water.

*Sink- it means to fall to the bottom of the water.
*Decay- it means to be slowly destroyed into bits in the
presence of water, air and soil due and due to the presence
of decomposing organisms.
*Absorb- to take in (something, such as a liquid) in a natural
or gradual way
Assignment
