Basketball Skills Check List

Dribbling (2nd - 5th grades)


Start with your feet shoulder-width apart and knees slightly bent. This stance will allow you to stay
balanced.
Place the ball in your dominant hand
Begin to push the ball down towards the floor by spreading your fingers and flexing your wrist.

You shouldn't move your entire arm—start with this simple hand and wrist motion, and focus on
controlling the ball.
When the ball bounces off the floor and back towards your hand, make contact on the top of the ball
with your fingertips/Finger pads and once again flex your wrist to push the ball back towards the floor.
Chest Pass (2nd - 5th grades)
start by gripping the ball on its sides (thumbs should be positioned behind the ball)
elbows extended out to the side.
Raise the ball to chest-level
extend your arms quickly to release the ball, and push it towards the target.
Thumbs should be pointed down towards the ground

Bounce Pass (2nd - 5th grades)
start by gripping the ball on its sides (thumbs should be positioned behind the ball)
elbows extended out to the side.
Raise the ball to chest-level aim for a spot on the floor between you and the target… ¾ of the way
extend your arms quickly to release the ball and push the ball towards the target.
Thumbs should be pointed down towards the ground

Overhead Pass (3rd – 5th grades)


Position your hands on the sides of the ball
Bring the ball directly above your forehead (elbows should be bent)

Extend your arms forward and release the ball towards the target

Aim for the chin area or hand
