along convergent boundaries; b. Determine the consequences of colliding plates, and; c. Values the significant effects of colliding plates. TWO CONTINENTAL PLATES CONVERGING What is the highest peak in the Philippines? Mt. Apo about 3,114 meters How about the highest mountain in the world? Mt. Everest Do you have any idea how tall Mount Everest is? 8,848 meters How do you think most of the tall mountains of the world are formed? ACTIVITY TIME! By Group Activity(Individual Output)
ACTIVITY 3: HEAD-ON COLLISION
PART C: Two Continental Plates Converging What will happen or formed when two continental plates coverge? Answer: A Collision Zone is formed How does it differ from the other two type of convergent boundaries? (Converging of Continental Plate and Oceanic Plate & Convergence of two Oceanic Plates) Answer: No trench, no volcano, and definitely no island arc are created during this process. Instead, what is created is a large group of tall mountains called mountain range. How Himalayas was formed? About 40-50 million years ago, two large land masses, India and Eurasia, collided and begin the formation of the most visible product of plate tectonics- the Himalayas. Since subduction is impossible between two colliding continental plates, pressure is released by pushing the crusts upward and forming Himalayan Peaks. Is there any possibility that earthquakes can happen without any volcanic activity? Are you prepared enough to survive any unexpected calamaties such as earthquakes or volcanic eruption? sWhat do you think are the effects of two colliding plates in our community or in the Philippines in a whole? 1. What happened to the strips of clay as they were pushed from opposite ends?
Answer: The strips of clay buckled
upward. 2. If the strips of clay represent the Earth’s lithosphere, what do you think is formed in the lithosphere?
Answer: Mountains are formed in the
lithosphere. 3. What other geologic event could take place with this type of plate movement aside from your answer in Q2?
Answer: Earthquakes will occur due to the
collision of the two plates. (Since there is no subduction, only shallow earquakes will happen. 4. In terms of the consequences on the Earth’s lithosphere, how will you differentiate this type of convergent plant boundary with the other two?
Answer: Since the two plates involved are both
continental plates there is no subduction process (because both plates are low in density). As a result, mountains are formed instead of volcanoes. Assignment:
