The reason why this research was carried out is so that I was able get an idea of what’s on the market already. Furthermore it was for me to see what they were missing and the problems they had and how
in my designing stage I could turn existing product problems into a key feature with my product. With this research I can gauge roughly how big my product will be and also the price range.
RESEARCH INTO THE TARGET MARKET

According to the Press Release on the Government Website (England Largest Outdoor Learning Project Reveals Children More Motivated to
Learn When Outside ~ 14 July 2016) https://www.gov.uk/government/news/englands-largest-outdoor-learning-project-reveals-children-more-
motivated-to-learn-when-outside

- Children from 125 schools across the South-West of England are happier, healthier and more motivated as the outdoors were turned into
classrooms
- 90% Felt Happier & Healthier
- 95% Makes lessons more enjoyable
- 72% got on better with other peers
- 93% Schools said it improves People Skills
- 92% Improves Pupils Health & Wellbeing and engages fun in learning
- 85% Positive Impact on Behaviour
- 90% Staff Survey Found it Useful for Curriculum Delivery
- 72% Positive Impact on Teacher Health & Wellbeing
- 79% Teachers had an Positive impact on their Teaching Practice

From these statistics its shows by teaching outdoors and having these spaces it means children are more likely to become more confidence in
themselves and also do better in assessments due to an increase in motivation. This can then change their career path for the better and this
can lead to steady economic growth for the country which is why I think the government should begin pushing outdoor learning environments. By
being outside too it means student are able to move around in a variety of environments which can further benefit the teachers pupils as it can
reenergise there thoughts of thinking.
Furthermore with all of the findings above its proves that Outdoor learning environments are essential to the Health & Wellbeing of the Teachers
and Pupils. For a project to be carried out to show this, its means that the market is niche and so there is a gap in the market that need to be
fulfilled in which I can do.

Client Feedback

After showing all the design to my client he has stated to me that he likes
Design 2, 3 & 4. He has said that he likes how all three design link together
and how the work well as a set as they have consistent design in which he
wants. He also stated that he would like to store Design 3 & 4 into Design 2
when they are not in use as it easier cover and protect them all from various
weather conditions. Furthermore he also wants an door that attached to
Design 2 to keep the other chairs and tables securely in there.

The reason why he didn’t choose any of the other designs is that there is no
continuity in the designs and that he would want to store them away in the
most compact way possible. He has also questioned about the reliability of
the Design 7,8 & 10 due to the lack of supports against the bench and how
since it such an open design that adding more supports will affect the
aesthetics of the product.

Design Idea 11 Key Features to the Chosen Designs

With my last design I wanted to a design a 8 seat configured table, where it would be used as a break and lunch time table so that students can
break away from their desks and sit somewhere, where it brings everyone together and that it isn’t overly up taking of the space around. This - Continuity Between All Designs

With my client he wanted to add a door on to Design 2. As he want this additional feature I have researched various Hinges and Locking Mechanisms that would work for this design. The Butt Hinge will be the hinge that will be used to open & close the door
as it is the most affordable and accessible if needs to be replaced and its fit the more discretely compared to the other hinges offered. The Shackleless Padlock will be the Locking Mechanism used as it provides great durability and also aesthetics. Although
the screw holes are exposed, we will be using coach bolts as they are the most secure. The reason why the other hinges were not chosen for this is because we wanted a hinge that didn’t stand out which the strap hinge does and that we wanted it to be
fairly cheap and the most convenient to replace which is something the Flag Hinge doesn’t offer. Furthermore the reason why the other locking mechanism weren’t chosen is because we didn’t want a latch on the lock due to when being open it can swing
away and potential injure someone which is why the Hasp & Staple were not chosen, additionally we didn’t want one that look fussy as it would ruin the aesthetics and which is why the Brenton Bolt was not chosen.

To make this model, I used 2D Design and drew out each part. After I drew out each part I then laser cut it on a piece of mount board. The scale of this model is in 1/10 size of the 1:1 scale measurements. With this model I design the additional door which
fit seamlessly against the 6 seater bench. With the door I designed a prototype hinge to see how the door would open and close and I also designed a test prototype of the locking mechanism. As well as this I played around with a detectable support leg for
the chairs in which is something I will further research in this development. Furthermore I discussed with my client that the one seater table would cost more than if I was to just to produce the two seater benches in design 3 and so he said that I should just
make an addition bench & table in the same spec as the Design 2 to cut labour and manufacture costs. The feedback I got when I showed my client this model, he liked how the new door for the six seater is incorporated and he is happy with the use of the
Butt Hinge and with the locking mechanism I chose (not displayed in the model) I showed him what it would look like and discussed the benefits with it and after he was happy for me to include he Shackless Padlock. He was also impressed by how well all
of the benches and tables fitted into the six seater.

align with the other than it costs time to fix it and with my project I need as much time as I can get.

this model I experimented with the chairs joints in which my client feedback was that he wanted to use Joint Two as it gives of the balance of stability and aesthetics. When showing my client this Plywood Model he was happy

Extra Supports For All Chairs Table Joints

To Join the Table Top & Stand with the Table Leg I will be using the Mortise & Tenon Joint.

My Client and I discussed that this was the best option as it is a neat and strong joint. On

top of this it also add modularity to the design as the user is able to disassemble the table

injuries to themselves and others sitting on it and also those nearby. The support bars will
change to different sized table tops or even change the height of the tables in which can be
be evenly distributed along and will also be joined with the chair legs in act of support of
useful in certain situations as maybe people want to sit on the two seater chair while using
one another. Furthermore these supports will be made using the same materials of the
the two seater table legs with the six seater table top as its mean the user has more usable
chairs legs to tie into the aesthetics of the chair it self and so it doesn’t look out of place or
space without having to use a taller table. If the user were to use the taller table than it
just stuck on.
could mean its less comfortable for them and so it can affected their productivity but also
their posture when sitting in which is something I don’t want the user to face.

With this Final Prototype Model I tested all of the final parts of development which were the joints for the supports for the chair and also the finger joints which connects the table top and table foot to the table leg. With this
prototype I drew all of the parts needed on to 2D Design which were drawn to a 1:10 scale. After I drew this onto 2D Design I then used the laser cutter to cut my drawings out on to Mount-Board. I Chose Mount-Board for my
Final Prototype as it was the most efficient way in seeing if the new developments worked or not. When I showed my client this final model he was happy with all the overall design and with the way all components functioned.
For Example with the extension chair and how that is seamlessly integrated into the six seater. With this final model it was to show me (manufacturer) if there were any parts that didn’t fit or work together. With this final model I
found that all everything worked as it should and that my client is happy to move forward into the final stages which include pricing and manufacturing of the product.
ANTHROMETRICS & SAFETY STANDARDS
Average Teenager Human Sizing Safety

One of the Safety Standard for my chairs &

tables are that there are no chips or rough
edges as students may cut them self on it
and can cause serve injury. To avoid this
from happening I will be making sure to
sand down all chips and rough edges to a
smooth surface. Once all chairs and tables
are built I will do a quality check on all of
them. To ensure that I have met these
standards for my client.

Another one of the Safety Standards for

800MM
my chairs & tables are that they are strong
enough to withhold heavy loads as we
700MM

don’t want anyone falling through the chair

or that when are leaning back they fall
backward. To insure this doesn’t happen I

will installing support beams that can

support the heavy loads. The support
beams will still suit the aesthetics of the
chairs as they will be made from the same
materials as the chair it self.

These measurements are of an average teenager. I need

these measurements so that I am able to scale up my
models I have made. Furthermore, these measurements
indicate weather there is enough depth and height in the
chair so that they can sit comfortably on it. This is

5200MM
important as students are likely going to be sitting on
these chairs for long durations (Around 1 Hour Per
Lesson). Additionally arm length is important as they need
to be able to write on the table comfortably when in
lessons. They are also more likely to focus more in lesson
if they are comfortable too which benefits their learning
