● Weaknesses:
● Poor listening and speaking.
● Unnatural and Inaccurate Pronunciation
● GTM is not interactive and engaging for students
Strenghts and Weaknesses of DM
Strenghts:
1. Students are motivated to be able to say and understand the words of
sentences in a foreign language taught by their teacher.
2. Because this method usually teachers first teach simple words and
sentences that students can understand and know in everyday language .
3. This method uses a lot of different props: videos, films, radio cassettes,
tape recorders, and various self-made media/props.
Weaknesses of DM
● Teaching can become passive, if the teacher is unable to motivate the students, it is
even possible that the students feel saturated and feel lost because the words and
sentences spoken by the teacher can never be understood, because the teacher only
uses a foreign language without translating it into the child's language.
● At the beginning levels it seems that this method feels difficult to apply, because
the students do not have the material (vocabulary) that they already understand
● Although in principle this method does not allow teachers to use everyday
language in delivering foreign language lessons, but in reality it is not always
consistent like this, the teacher is forced to translate the difficult words of the
foreign language into the language of the students.
How To Use The Grammar Translation Method
1. Ask the students to take 5 vocabulary words from their favorite song
and then translate it into English.
2. In teaching a particular lesson in grammar, ask the students to
memorize the rules, and they should give their sentences as samples.
3.Ask the students to take down their friends’ conversations in their native
language and then translate it into English.
4.Ask students to write 10 verbs from the article assigned to them, and
then they should give the synonyms and antonyms.
5.Ask students to memorize at least 5 words per day in English and give
their native language equivalent.
How To Use the Direct Method
1. Students take turns reading the text aloud.
2. After reading, they ask questions according to their language.
3. The teacher answers according to their language too.
4. The teacher and students recite the vocabulary together.
5. Students compose questions and statements for other students.
6. The teacher asks students to fill in the exercises.
7. Students read the exercise aloud and complete the missing words.
8. The teacher asks students to take notes by dictating.
