1. Please explain in detail one method , You can choose Grammar Translation Method
( GTM ) or direct Method ? How Does the teache apply it ? Some skills can be used ?
Answer
I choose Grammar Translation Method , Grammar Translation Method ( GTM ) it was
suggesred to teach classical languages like Latine , Greek ,Roman, Indonesia, ect, GTM is
also called classical method , traditional method , Academic Method , ect.
GTM : Goals and Purpose
1. appear to enable students to read and translate literature written in the source
language, its main purpose is to help students to read and translate written texts in this
method student are given set of texts and they are asked to translate them from foreign
language to native language as its name indicates grammar translation method , it is
based or it focuses mainly on two things which are grammar and translation.
2. To further students general intellectual development, GTM help students to
developtheir knowledge and develop their intellectuality because they are exposed to
text and they are asked to translate them so as to understand the external world and to
build up a good knowledge
3. Approaching language through a detailed analysis of its grammar, its focuses mainly
on analyzing grammatical structures
4. Understanding and manipulating morphology and Syntax of foreign languages of
course again it analyzes and scrutinize sthe word structure morphology and syntax.
Principles of GTM
 It focuses on translating grammatical forms.
 Grammar is taught deductively and then practised through translation exercises.
 Grammar rules are presented and studied explicitely.
 Reading and writing are the primary skills to be developed.
 Mastery of grammar of the foreign language is essential to understand the written
target language.
 Vocabulary is taught from bilingual word list
 Mother tongue is used as the medium of instruction
 Focus is on accuracy
GTM in a Classroom

 Classes are taught in the mother tongue, with little active use of the target
language.
 Much vocabulary is taught in the form of lists of isolated words.
 Long elaborate explanations of grammar are given.
 Grammar provides the rule for putting words together. and instruction often
focuses on the form and inflection of words.
 Reading of difficult classical texts is begun early.
 Little attention is paid to the content of texts, which are treated as exercises in
grammatical analysis.
