12 Ms are subdivided into four
different clusters – preparation,
marketing, execution and self-
leadership. Each cluster is associated
with unique capacities needed by
entrepreneurs:
Capacities Needed by Entrepreneur
o Intelligence quotient (IQ) – for preparation,
or the capacity to think and reason.
o Creativity quotient (CQ) – for marketing,
or capacity to innovate.
o Emotional quotient (EO) – for execution, or
the capacity to sense and empathize.
o Adveisity quotient (AO) – for self-
leadership, or the capacity to recover and
make progress.

oIs needed when problems and
obstacles are experienced because
of the nature of entrepreneurship,
where risk and uncertainty are
expected.

Adversity Quotient (AQ) by Entrepreneur
o When the Nissan car distributorship was taken
away from Universal Motors Corporation (UMC)
by Nissan Philippines, and UMC became a
minority stockholder of the new company, most of
the employees of UMC were not absorbed by
Nissan Philippines. UMC decided to form a
subsidiary, Bayan Automotive Industries
Corporation (BAIC) in 2014 to become the
Philippine distributor of BAIC cars, a fortune
global 500 company from China, and continued
the employment of their people, turning obstacle
into a new opportunity.
Capacities Needed by Entrepreneur
Adversity Quotient (AQ)
o Billionaire Jack Ma, founder of Alibaba shared his adversity
story when he was young, starting from when he failed a key
primary school test twice, and failed three times while in
middle school. He also applied to study in Harvard and was
rejected ten times. He remembered applying for jobs and got
rejected 30 times, or the time 25 people applied in KFC and
they accepted 24 except him, or when 5 people applied for a
police job and they accepted 4 except him. But he persisted,
not giving up on himself. When faced with adversity, stop
giving excuses and start finding solutions to keep moving.
7 COMPETENCIES

1. RISK APPETITE
Sees reawards for taking on opportunities that
have potential positive (or negative)
consequences.
o Am I not afraid to fail?
o Am I not comfortable with ambiguity and
uncertainty?
o Do I have the courage to try new approaches
or things or challenge the status quo?
2. SENSE MAKING
Scanning the environment to detect and interpret what
is happening today in order to connect and take actions
on potential future outcomes
o Do I know who to tap and how to connect the dots in
finding opportunities and defining issues and threats?
o Do I have critical thinking skills to generate
alternatives and make decisions efficiently?
o Do I have numbers proficiency and understanding to
create value for all stakeholders?
3. COSTUMER-FOCUS
Choosing, initiating and sustaining relationships with
costumers.
o Do I think of the market potential of noncustomers
and not just existing customers?
o Am I able to solve pain points of the customers or
noncustomers in a new way?
o Am I holistic to solve needs of channels,
intermediaries and end consumers as well?
4. INITIATIVE
Being proactive in taking prompt actions to attain
objectives.
o Am I a self-starter without waiting to be told to act on
a task?
o Do I have organization skills to effectively manage
operations?
o Am I curious and asks questions in order to keep
improving what I am doing?
5. INFLUENCE
Ability to use personal branding and interpersonal
styles to gain buy-in from constituents.
o Am I persuasive enough to get everyone involved on
board as a team?
o Do I have the credibility to convince others about my
vision and my perspective?
o Do I have the ability to motivate people to follow a
set work method?
6. ADAPTABILITY
Adjusting to external changes while initiating internal
changes to attain objectives.
o Do I understand and master the things I am
supposed to be doing?
o Do I approach change positively and quickly?
o Do I easily adjust and try new approaches as part of
my continuous learning?
7. GRIT
Persistency to attain long-term goals despite adversity.
o Do I have the emotional maturity to cope and win
against hurdles?
o Do I have the resilience to come back after a setback?
o Do I have the ability to convert obstacles into
opportunities?
