Scotch Yoke Mechanism

• The Scotch yoke mechanism is a reciprocating motion mechanism,

converting the linear motion of a slider into the rotational motion of a
crank or vice versa.
• Advantages :
• Easy construction of assembly and operation.
• Used to perform of cutting, sliding and etc.
•  It is a directly convert method of rotary into Linear.
• High torque to be made with small size of cylinder.
• Disadvantages
• The high wear produced due to sliding friction and high contact pressure.
•   It requires proper guide way for reciprocating motion of arm.
Problem : Scotch Yoke Mechanism

Pb : The crank OP has an angular velocity of 10 rad/s and an angular

acceleration of 30 rad/s2 . Determine the acceleration of Slider P in the Guide
and the horizontal acceleration of the guide .
P
Q
200mm

C Guide 30o
10 rad/s 30 rad/s2 O

Point Q is taken beneath P on guide link .

Point C is on Guide Link
Vpo = 10*0.2 = 2 m/s
1. Take vector OP = 2m/s
2. Velocity of Q relative to P is along the path so draw a
line parallel to this path vertical through P , we get
p
point q.
3. Velocity of C relative to G is along the path so draw
horizontally through g to get point c .
4. Q and C are fixed point on same link , so they coincide.

Acceleration Diagram
ac po = op2/op = 22/0.2 = 20 m/s2 Acceleration of slider apq= 4.75m/s2

at po =30*0.2 = 6m/s2
Horizontal acceleration of Guide = acg = 20.5m/s2
1. First take centripetal acceleration ac po or o1, p0 and tangential acceleration atpo or pop1.

2. Linear acceleration of sliding of Q relative to P is vertical . Draw a line to locate point q1 on that .

3. Draw a horizontal line through g1 to find point c1 .

4. Zero relative velocity between Q and P so they coincide , intersection of horizontal

and vertical line locates point q1, c1.

5. Q and P are coincident points so no Coriolis acceleration
