Stress effects on memory: An update and integration

The article titled - "Stress effects on memory". can be found in the Week 3 learning activities,
which you should have reviewed before this workshop.

With this in mind, let’s now answer the following question:

• How might stressful experiences affect learning and memory processes?

Stressful experiences impacting learning and

memory processes

Can you think of a time when you were under lots of pressure and stress,
and you forgot even the simplest of task?

Now consider how stress may impair cognitive function

latrobe.edu.au

Now consider how stress may impair cognitive function

Stress plays a major role in the ability to use cognitive processes
and to think critically.
As you may cover this year in your anatomy and physiology units, as
stress levels increase, adrenal and pituitary glands release certain
chemicals that increase heart rate allowing the body to run from
danger.
If there is no immediate danger, the stress hormones that were
released can remain in the body continually promoting uneasiness
and increasing stress levels.
When too much of the stress hormone cortisol accumulates, it can
damage brain cells affecting memory and other cognitive
processes.
Stressors consume the brain’s energy, preventing other functions,
and can lead to irrational and/or illogical thoughts.

Emotional Competencies (Goleman, 2022)

Goleman’s revised 2002 theory of EI

Personal competence
• Self-awareness – ability to identify one’s own emotional states and recognise their impact while using gut feelings to
guide decisions

• Self-regulation/management – ability to control one’s emotions, impulses and adapt to changing circumstances /
ability to manage one’s own emotional states;

Social competence
• Social awareness –ability to sense, understand, and react to others’ emotions / ability to assess and influence others’
emotions

• Social skills/management – ability to inspire, influence, and develop others while managing conflict / the ability to
sustain good interpersonal relationships

Case Study
Intelligence: emotional and cognitive – a strength in one, does not always mean a strength in the other.
The importance of considering the impact of our own emotional intelligence in a health and human
services setting.

You are a graduate paramedic working on a busy Saturday morning. You and your colleague have been
called to a code-2 (an acute but non-time critical response. The ambulance does not use lights and sirens
to respond in this instance). The emergency response operator has advised you to attend a local shopping
centre where 45-year-old Cynthia has reportedly slipped and fractured her ankle. When you arrive at the
scene, you see Cynthia who despite being in severe pain, is attempting to walk on her fractured ankle. You
politely ask Cynthia to take a seat on the stretcher so you can assess her foot however Cynthia is non-
compliant and refusing to follow your instructions. Cynthia is yelling, screaming and pushing you and your
colleague away. As you are feeling frustrated, you sternly say to Cynthia “you need to calm down so I can
take a detailed history, note your symptoms, obtain your past medical history and complete a
neurovascular status assessment”. You ask Cynthia if she has any allergies and for her to rate her level of
pain on a scale of 1 to 10. Cynthia does not respond verbally and continues to push you away. You again
attempt to explain to Cynthia that it is very difficult for you to assist her if she does not cooperate. Cynthia’s
elderly mother arrived at the scene after liaising with security to seek help and explains to you that Cynthia
has an intellectual disability (low cognitive intelligence), and she is cared for full-time at home. Whilst
Cynthia is notably less distressed upon her mother’s arrival, you continue to communicate with her mother
as opposed to Cynthia.
