Brainstorming:
Why Congress supported Purna Swaraj
(Hindi: पूर्ण, Purna, meaning "complete",
Hindi: स्व, Swa, meaning "self" and Hindi: राज,
raj, meaning "rule") in India?
The Cripps Proposal,
1942:
 The proposals were seen as too radical by
the British and as too conservative by the
Indian National Congress who wanted
complete independence.
 The Mission was rejected by the Indian
National Congress, the Muslim League and
other Indian groups.
 The Hindu Mahasabha and the Liberals
were against the right of states to split.
The Quit India Movement, 1942:
 On 8 August 1942 at the All-India Congress Committee
session in Bombay, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi
launched the 'Quit India' movement.
 The next day, Gandhi, Nehru and many other leaders of
the Indian National Congress were arrested by the British
Government. He called for a voluntary British withdrawal
from India.
 Mr Jinnah’s reaction to Quit India Movement was that he
added an extra word to it. It was ‘Divide and Quit’.
The Gandhi Jinnah Talks, 1944.
 Jinnah expressed that an agreement could only
be reached if Congress accepted a separate
state and nationality for Muslims of India but
Gandhi was not willing to accept the division of
India.
 The talks were unsuccessful as Mr Jinnah
wanted a complete acceptance of Lahore
Resolution of 1940 in the agreement.
 As a result of Jinnah Gandhi talks, Jinnah
emerged as a leader who can negotiate on the
equal terms with the leader of other major
party in India, the Congress.
