REVIEW:
REVIEW : A survey of 15 SHS students of LPNSHS-CAA Campus
shows that they read on average 10 hours per week with standard
deviation of 2 hours. Assume that the distribution is normal, make a
conclusion on the average reading time of students at 98% confidence
level.

We are 98% confident that the average reading

time of LPNSHS- CAA CAMPUS students is
between 8.64 hours and 11.36 hours.
DISCUSSION:
FACTORS AFFECTING SAMPLE SIZE
DETERMINATION
FACTORS AFFECTING SAMPLE SIZE
There are three factors that influence the sample size determination; (1) the
DETERMINATION
level of confidence, (2) the population standard deviation, and (3) the
margin of error. Among these factors, only two are under the researcher's
control. These are:
• MARGIN OF ERROR- Since no sample will be perfect, you need
to decide how much error to allow. The confidence interval
determines this. The less error you're willing to accept, the bigger
the sample size needs to be.

• CONFIDENCE LEVEL- This determines how certain you want to

be that the parameter falls within your confidence interval. Most
common confidence intervals are 90%, 95%, or 99%. The more
confident you want to be, the bigger the sample size needs to be.
SAMPLE SIZE FORMULA :
RULE IN ROUNDING OFF FOR
SAMPLE
ALWAYS ROUND SIZE
UP TO THE NEXT WHOLE
NUMBER!
• Because the computed sample size based on the
formula is always the minimum.
• The larger the sample, the less error.

EXAMPLE POPULATION
: Let us imagine that you own a fast-food company. You

MEAN
are doing a survey to get an idea of how long customers stay in a
restaurant. In the past two years, it was observed that the standard
deviation of the time they stay in a restaurant is 12 minutes. How
many people do you need to observe so that the desired margin of
error will not be more than three (3) minutes with a confidence level
of 95%?

Note: As the Margin of Error gets smaller, the sample size gets larger. Or you can say that one way to minimize the
error is by increasing the sample size. The same variation will be applied if the Margin of Error increases.

EXAMPLE: A researcher found that the IQ scores of the ALS students
in the Division of Quezon Province are normally distributed with a
mean of 110 and a standard deviation of 10.

a. How many ALS students are needed to test so that the estimate
will not be more than 5 from the population mean with a 99% level
of confidence?
b. Due to limited contact with ALS students, the researcher tested a
small number of ALS students. Explain the effect of this small
sample on the estimate of the parameter.

EXAMPLE: A confidence interval estimate has a maximum error of
2.50. If the distribution of the data where the estimate is obtained is
normal with a standard deviation of 9.

a. How many samples are considered in 98% confidence

interval estimate for the mean?
b.What must be done to the sample size to reduce the margin of
error of the confident interval estimate? Support your answer.

EXAMPLE: An investigator wants to estimate the caffeine consumption of SHS
students. How many students would be required to rnsure that a 95% confidence
interval estimate for the mean caffeine intake (measured in mg) is within 15 mg of
the true mean? Assume that the standard deviation in caffeine intake is 68 mg.

QUICK TIPS :
• Always round up the computed sample size to the next whole
number.
• The lower the margin of error, the larger sample size is needed.
• The lower the level of confidence, the smaller sample size is
needed.
• The lower the standard deviation, the smaller sample size is needed.
• To reduce the error of estimate, you may ;

a) consider a larger sample size

b) reduce the level of confidence

2 : The college president asks the statistics teacher to estimate the avergae age of the students at their college. How
many samples are needed? The statistics teacher would like to be 99% confident that the estimate should be accurate
within 1 year. From a previous study, the standard deviation of the ages is known to be 3 years.
