A speed-time graph tell you if acceleration is

positive or negative number.

If acceleration is a If acceleration is a
positive number, the negative number, the

Free-Fall
In the free fall the acceleration is constant.
g is referred to as the acceleration of gravity. Its
value is 9.81 m/s2 on Earth.

Equation

Free-Fall Example

A lead sphere is dropped from the second floor of building.

It takes 1.31 seconds to reach the ground.
How high is the building if have 48 floors?

Free Fall exercises
1.- A stone is dropped from a balloon that is descending at a
uniform rate of 15 m/s when it is 1200 m from ground.

a) Calculate the velocity and position of the stone after 10 s

2.- The best human jumpers in the world have a vertical leap of
about 1.2 m
b) How fast would they have to leave the ground to get that
high at the top of their jump?
c) How long will they be in the air (up and down)? (Hint: where
do they land compared to where they took off?)
Assessment
• How are velocity, time and acceleration related
mathematically?

• A swimmer speeds from 1.1 m/s to 1.3 m/s during the

last 20 seconds of a workout. What is the swimmer´s
acceleration during this time interval?

• While walking to school, you approach an intersection

and slow down from 2m/s to a stop in 3 seconds.
What was your acceleration during this time interval?
M.U.A.
(Movimiento Uniformemente Acelerado)
