ABSTRACT:
The shock absorber is used in automobiles to control dampers and improve
the handling of the vehicle on the irregularities of the road. In a conventional
shock absorber due to vibration, the energy generated in the shock absorber is
the kinetic energy that gets dissipated in the form of heat which is waste and has
no further use. The power generator electromagnetic suspension system is a
system that converts vehicle bump generated linear motion and vibration, into
electricity to be used in battery charging. This eliminates the damper as well as
produces electricity. In this, the use of permanent shock absorber, this energy is
wasted in the form of heat. The Electromagnetic Suspension system is capable of
providing a smoother ride compare to any other suspension system.

INTRODUCTION:
SUSPENSION:

The work of a suspension is to

provide comfort to the cabin, make sure the
car stays in contact with the ground and that
the driver has control over the tires at all points
which is just achieved by having contact with
the road.

We all now the basic suspension is spring,

how much the load applied on spring it
rebounds with same load i.e, Damping is not
possible in spring. K=Force(F)/Displacement(X)
  Where,
K=Stiffness of the spring
SHOCK ABSORBER:
If springs are used in a suspension then that won’t give a good ride rather will vibrate
you inside to dampen this vibration we use shock absorber.

Keeps the suspension from continuing to bounce after spring

compression and extension.

Limits spring compression-extension movements

to smooth the vehicle’s ride.

• Without shock absorbers, the vehicle would continue

to bounce up and down.

• Shock Absorber is a mechanical device used

absorbing the energy of sudden
impulses or shock in machinery or Structure.
• It is also known as Damper.
CLASSIFICATION OF
SUSPENSION SYSTEM:
ACTIVE SUSPENSION

SUSPENSION SYSTEM SEMI-ACTIVE SUSPENSION

PASSIVE SUSPENSION
PASSIVE SUSPENSION SYSTEM:
Passive suspension system is commonly used in commercial passenger cars due to its
market value. The damping force is tuned and fixed to a constant value.

In general, the system is consisting of springs and single or twin-tube dampers.

Generally softer damper provide better rider comfort, while stiffer damper achieve
better stability. Thus, the damping force of the passive suspension system is tuned to
its optimal condition which can successfully damp most road irregular input.

ACTIVE SUSPENSION SYSTEM:

Active suspension system applies external force from actuator to counter the
vibration from ground to achieve excellent vibration migration

However, active suspension system is only implemented for certain vehicles due to
the matters on size, weight, power consumption, and price. Moreover, if the power is
down on suspension system, the vehicle will experience zero damping force.
SEMI-ACTIVE SUSPENSION SYSTEM:

Semi-active suspension system utilizes the road input and provides better
vibration isolation by changing damping force according to road profile.

Semi-active suspension system takes the advantage of changing the damping

force by external power when vehicle experience different road irregular inputs.

For example, when the vehicle hits a bump, the sensor and micro-controller
take the input signal and vary the damper characteristic to eliminate the
vibration in a short period of time. The performance of semi-active suspension
system is better than passive suspension system, especially response to sudden
effects such as hitting a bump.

Moreover, if the controller fails to its function, the semi-active suspension

system still can perform as passive suspension system.

Here, We are using Semi-Active type of suspension system for effective power
generation through electro-magnetic process.
LITERATURE REVIEW:
1)Zhigang Fang and Xuexun Guo et.al. [2013] presented a new kind of shock absorber,
hydraulic electromagnetic energy regenerative shock absorber (HESA), which can recover
energy from vibration of vehicles. The road excitation frequency, load resistance and
damping ratio are found to greatly affect the energy recovery of HESA

Graph between Velocity and Power generated in

Suspension.

Class A is the best road and minimum vibration.

Class D is the worst bumpist road with lot
vibrations.

When we use Electro-magnetic suspension we

generated power and all the classes. In class D has
more vibrations than Class A.

Here, Class D will produce more power compare

to Class A

 Electric car with Electro magnetic suspension produce 4% of power generation.

 Hybrid-Electric car with Electro Magnetic Suspension will produce around 6% of

power generation.
ELECTRO MAGNETIC SUSPENSION:
Electro magnetic suspension(EMS) is the magnetic
levitation of an object achieved by constantly altering
the strength of magnetic field produced by
electromagnets using a feedback loop.

The power generation electromagnetic suspension

system is a system that converts vehicle bump
generated linear motion & vibration, into electricity to
be used in battery charging this will help in reducing
pollution. Power generation using electromagnetic
suspension.

• It is also called as magnetorheological

dampers.

“ rheology=Viscosity”
Every automotive suspension has two goals: passenger comfort and vehicle control.
Electromagnetic suspension is a system that converts vehicle bump into electrical energy.

Its primary function is to reduce effects of vibrations and irregularities on roads. This is
achieved with the help of shock absorbers that emit vibrational energy in the form of
heat.

This heat is the one that this project aims to harvest and convert into electrical power
that can then charge the battery. This research proposes a design of a system where the
heat lost in the suspension system and brakes combined is extracted, converted into a
usable form of electrical energy which can charge batteries.

Magnetic suspension system is mainly based on the property magnets that like poles of
magnets repel each other. This characteristic of magnets is used for suspension work of
system. This system also contains spring in between these two magnets to avoid direct
contact of two magnets due to overloading. This system finds large number of applications
in automobile industry.
Electro Magnetic suspension can be tuned in any setting you want or in real
time. It can be stiff or soft or acceleration sensitive or position sensitive
dampers and it can also have many zones in position sensitive setting. So it can
be everything of everything you want.
Methodology:
 It is similar to Shock absorber but the piston is wounded with
copper wires and Outer chamber is fixed with permanent
magnets.

 When force is applied on the system the permanent magnets

performs the motion between coil winding. This results in
generation of magnetic flux due to which electric energy is
obtained.
 This linear motion of the system uses a dense
permanent magnet stack embedded on the
small diameter inner chamber and coil winded
on pipe having larger diameter.

 This generated power is stored in batteries for

in either electric or hybrid electric vehicles.
Since the coil produce alternating current it can
be directly used with respect to certain
condition.
 Fluid in EMS is basically an oil with fine iron particles.

 The electromagnetic suspension system turns all types of vehicle bumps into
electricity, including linear motion and vibration. The energy is absorbed without
being converted into electrical energy by the shock absorber enclosed within the
casing and spring system. To generate electricity from this motion, the
electromagnetic is applied.

 A metal shaft, spring, magnet coils, base with screws, and joints make up the
shock absorber. Cylindrical supports are utilized to reduce friction and provide a
smooth generation process. The spring is precisely fitted to obtain the
appropriate motion and magnet overlap, allowing electricity to be generated
using the electromagnetism principle.

 The electromagnetic suspension system is used to generate smart electricity.

WHAT WE WANT TO DO
TO IMPROVE EFFICIENCY:
 In semi-Active suspension system we
generally use Ferrite or Alnico magnets
but we are using Rare-earth magnets.

 Rare-earth magnets are strong

permanent magnets made from alloys of
rare-earth elements.

 They developed in the 1970s and 1980s,

rare-earth magnets are the strongest
type of permanent magnets made,
producing significantly stronger
magnetic fields than other types such as
ferrite or alnico magnets.
Why electromagnetic compare to
shock absorber:
• No heat generation to due friction.

• Possible to implement in vehicle suspension with

minimum design chances.

• Linear design of electromagnetic energy

harvesting system.

• Power generation is more in electro magnetic

suspension compare to shock absorber.
