Periodic

Table
Milestones
Throughout the years many scientists have tried to
develop a way to classify and create an organized display
of all known elements that showcases the important
information and connection of elements.

Dobereiner’s Triads
Dobereiner’s triads
1817 • A German scientist, Johann Wolfgang
Döbereiner found groups of three elements
(triads) with similar physical and chemical
properties.
• The law of triads stated that the mean of the
atomic masses of the first and third element
equals the atomic mass of the second element.
• In 1829, three more triads were identified.

Newlands Octaves
Newlands Octaves 1864
• John Newlands, a British chemist arranged
elements in increasing order of atomic mass
• 62 elements arranged into 8 groups with 8
elements each
• The 8th element has a similar property with the
first element, this is why it was compared to
octaves of music.

Mendeleev’s Periodic Table

Mendeleev’s Periodic Table
1869 • Dmitri Ivanovich Mendeleev, a Russian chemist
believed that the atomic mass of an element is
the most fundamental property in classifying
elements
• Arranged the 63 elements in increasing order of
their atomic masses and properties
• Mendeleev’s Law: “the properties of elements
are the periodic function of their atomic masses.”

Modern Periodic Table 1913
• An english physicist, Henry Mosley arranged
the elements based on their atomic numbers.
• Atomic number is the most fundamental
property of an element
• Modern Periodic Law: “The physical and
chemical properties of the elements are
periodic functions of their atomic numbers”

WHY WASN’T THESE HELPFUL?
Periodic Table Milestones SHORTCOMINGS

Dobereiner’s triads • Many new elements didn’t fit the given law
• Existing elements didn’t fit in Dobereiner’s triads

• The law of octaves only existed until calcium.

Newlands Octaves • Other elements without similar properties were
grouped together

Mendeleev’s Periodic • Hydrogen had an indefinite position

• Elements with higher mass was placed before
