At the conclusion of our time together, you should be able to:

• identify the prominent contributions in the

discovery of periodic table of element,
• explain the organization of element in the
periodic table, and
• appreciate your own learning by creating a
timeline of the development of periodic table of
element.

ANTOINE LAVOSIER
Antoine Lavoisier (1789)
• The earliest attempt to classify the elements was in
1789.
• He listed and considered 33 substances as elements.
• He grouped the elements based on their properties
into gases, non-metals, metals and earths. Several
other attempts were made to group elements
together over the coming decades.

JOHANN DOBEREINER
John Dobereiner (1817)
•He was a German scientist who
developed the Law of Triads.
Each triad was composed of set
of three elements that have
similar properties.
LAW OF TRIADS
•it is a group composed of three
elements where the middle
element has properties that are an
average of the other two members
of the triad when ordered by the
atomic mass.

LAW OF TRIADS
DEPICTS OR PROBLEMS
• a large number of several element could not
be grouped into triads (iron, manganese,
nickel, cobalt, zinc, and copper.)
• dissimilar elements could not be grouped
into triads.
• only three triads were successfully
classified.

JOHN NEWLANDS
JOHN NEWLANDS (1863)
•proposed the law of octaves
•arranged the element by their increasing
atomic weights, every eigth element had
properties similar to each other.
•has a resemblance to a musical octave.
LAW OF OCTAVES
LIMITATIONS
• applicable only to elements with low atomic
masses.
• fails to explain similarities of elements with
higher atomic weights.
• he thought that only 56 element existed.
• the periodic table did not include inert
gases.

DMITRI MENDELEEV
DMITRI MENDELEEV (1869)
• the father of periodic table.
• he arranged the element according to
increasing atomic masses in horizontal rows.
• created the periodic law which states that
the properties of the elements are the
periodic functions of their atomic masses.

What went wrong?
•in devising his table, he
did not conform
completely to the order of
the atomic mass.

LOTHAR MEYER
LOTHAR MEYER(1869)
• he arranged the elements based on their
atomic masses and valencies. The
valence of an element is the combining
power of the element with other
element.
• he also used the atomic volume of
elements and compare it with their
atomic mass by putting it in a graph.
•Meyer drafted his final version of
periodic table in 1868. Unfortunately,
he did not publish it.
•He predicted the existence of
undiscovered elements but did not
elaborate on the properties of
unkown elements, which Mendeleev
did.

HENRY MOSELY
HENRY MOSELY (1913)
• He demonstrated that the major
properties of an element are determined
by the atomic number, not by the atomic
mass.
• he stated that there were only three
unknown elements, with atomic numbers
43, 61 and 75 between aluminum and
gold.
Mosely's Periodic Law
•states that the physical and
chemical properties of
elements are a periodic
function of their atomic
numbers.
