BACKGROUND

• Urbana and Feliza was a novel written by


Presbitero D. Modesto de Castro, a catholic priest
and moralist, the so called “Father of Classic
Prose in Tagalog”, a writer and an orator.
• His work(Urbana and Feliza) tremendously
popular from 19th century to the first half of the
20th century.
• Its author used the epistomology style
wherein series of thirty four letters,
members of a family, gave each other
advice on the ideal conduct and behavior
expected of a midle-class and Cristian
family.
Characters
• Urbana - the eldest of the sisters; studied in Manila. Her
name symbolizes “Urbanidad” or good manners in
English because of her warm personality.
• Feliza - Younger sister of Urbana. The one one who take
care of the house . She writes to her sister about her
worries and ask advices on how to properly act in her
sorroundings. Her name means maligaya.
• Honesto- Youngest of the three whom they always
advices to stay away from vices and fights.

SUMMARY
• Urbana and Feliza are sisters. Urbana as the oldest,
followed by Feliza and their brotherHonesto. They live
in a humble home in Bulacan. Feliza always admire her
sister when it comes to values and traits. One day, she
wake up in an empty bed. She then realized that her
sister Urbana left for Manila. to keep in touch with each
other, they both exchange their stories tough letters.
Feliza, who was left in their hometown in Paombong
Bulacan, ask for her older sister’s advice who study in an
exclusive school for girls in Manila, knowing that she knows
what’s the right thing to do.
• Also, she reprimands her younger brother Honesto to not
engage in vices, fights, and not to hang out with bad
people.
• The letter exchanged were both formal from their day to
day lives, until to the point where Feliza asks her sister on
what she should do about her suitor Amadeo. Felza has
second thoughts about marrying Amadeo, but she pushed
through the wedding after Urbana settled her doubts and
fears.
• The last part of Felizas letter is about their father’s death,
stating that their father doesn’t want Urbana to know that
he died, unless he was finally burried, so she won’t feel
sad. Urbana respond to the letter telling her deepest
empathy . She also mentioned her desire to pursue being
a nun.
Symbolism
Urbana symbolizes “urbanity” or ‘good manners’ in English.

Feliza who came from the Spanish word which means


happiness through fulfilling good deeds.

Honesto represents sincerity of heart and neatness of


honor.
