Project: Algebros

By: Nico Summers

Introduction

I worked with Kaitlin Loughran

to tutor students in Ms. Provance’s
Algebra I classes.
Mentors

Ms. Provance was very happy to work

with me. While she was gone first
quarter, I worked with Ms.
Macaleigh.
Vision and Proposal

I was initially unsure what I wanted my project to be. I wanted

it to include tutoring and math, but it was difficult to figure out how
to incorporate that. Eventually Kaitlin and I decided we’d work with
Ms. Provance and her classes. I’ve tutored before, but I wanted to
learn more about how to work with students.
Driving Question

Algebra I is a difficult subject, and it’s for important for all

other high school math courses. With Covid and Ms. Provance being
gone, it was important that the students understood math concepts.
This led me to my driving question: how can I best prepare students
for high school math? I was able to answer this question by tutoring.
The best way for me personally to help out the students was to
spend time in the classroom working with them.
Beginning
I met with Mr. Adam and Ms. Marsh to
try to figure out what to do for my project.
After speaking, Kaitlin and I created a
project proposal for Ms. Provance. She was
very excited, and we began to work with Ms.
Macaleigh and Ms. Alexander to get the
wheel turning.
Middle
I went into Ms. Provance‘s
classroom during 4th and 5th
period to tutor students. I spent
a total of an hour-and-a-half
every Thursday in the classroom.
When students began to warm up
to me, I was able help them work
on homework as well as study for
tests. I also helped Ms. Provance
with creating tests and seating
charts.
End

To finalize my project, I worked with

Ms. Provance on data analysis, and
calculated the total number of hours
spent in the classroom, the total
amount of time I spent with students
one on one, and the number of unique
students I tutored. I continued to
tutor as well.

Reflection
I really enjoyed this project, and it made me more
confident in my teaching skills. Getting the students to
be willing to work with me was difficult, and one specific
student almost flat out refused to work with me. A
couple weeks ago he was able to do a multi step problem
with little to no trouble. I am very proud of him and
some of my other students, and I am very happy that my
data analysis shows I was able to make a difference.
Takeaways For the Future

This project has helped me build my tutoring skills, and I now feel
very confident in them. Next year I will likely use it in my senior
project and may use it for a future job.
Acknowledgments
Ms. Provance was a great help for this project, and I’m very
thankful that she let us use her classroom as well as work on the
data analysis with me. Kaitlin was also a great partner, and I enjoyed
being able to discuss challenges and problem solve with her.
