Lord true source of light and wisdom, give

me a keen sense of understanding, a

retentive memory and the capacity to
grasp things correctly. Grant me the grace
to be accurate in my expositions and the
skills to express myself with thoroughness
and clarity. Be with me at the start of my
work, guide its progress and bring it to
completion. Grant this through Christ, our
Lord. Amen
Objectives:
* Explain the postulates of the cell theory
* Describe the structure and function of major and subcellular
organelles
* Distinguish prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells according to their
distinguishing features
* Classify different cell types (of plant/animal tissues) and specify the
functions of each
* Characterize the phases of the cell cycle and their control points
* The Cell Theory

Who is an English scientist that
examined a thin slice of cork
under the microscope?

He observed that the piece of

cork was composed of many
compartments that resembled little
rooms with surrounding walls.
These compartments he called as CELLS.
The cells Hook observed were not
Living and he concentrated his study only
on the structure, particularly the cell wall,
and did not pursue his investigation of
the cell content.
1676
Who is the Dutch inventor that published
his observations on tiny living organisms
which he named animalcules.

Anton Van Leeuwenhoek

It was believed that Leeuwenhoek was the first to observe
the structure of a red blood cell of different animals as well as a
sperm cell under his microscope and multitude of single-celled
organisms in pond water.
What else Leeuwenhoek discovered?
• He discovered free cells and observed the nucleus
within some red blood cells.
• He also discovered bacteria, free-living and parasitic
protists, and many other microscopic organisms.
Why Hooke and Leeuwenhoek discoveries had very
little advancements?

-traditional belief on the theory of spontaneous

generation.
Spontaneous generation theory- states that living things may
arise from non-living matter.
1831
Who was a Scottish botanist that able to
compare diverse kinds of plant specimens under the
microscope?
Then he indicated there is one common among
them. What was common among them? cell

Robert Brown
He then discovered the dark dense spot
inside the cell which he termed as the
nucleus.
* 1838
* a German botanist stated that all plants are composed of
cells.
1839
-anotherGerman zoologist concluded that animals are
composed of cells.
*Jointly, Schleiden and Schwann came out with the theory
that all living things are composed of cells.
1855
-a German physician, studied cell reproduction.
He summarized years of research by stating,
“Where a cell exists, there must have been a
pre-existing cell.”
The discoveries of these are
summarized in the cell theory, one of
the fundamental concepts of biology.
The cell theory states the following:
a. all living things are composed of one or
more cells; What does it mean by this?
b. cell is the basic unit of life in all living
things; Who can explain this?
c. all cells come from pre-existing cells.
Who can also explain this?
Who can explain to us the cell theory?

*May God the Father bless us, may
God the Son heal us, may God the
Holy Spirit enlighten us, and give us
eyes to see with, ears to hear with,
hands to do the work of God with,
feet to walk with, and mouth to
preach the word of salvation with,
And may the angel of peace watch
over us and lead us at last, to the
Lord's gift to the kingdom. Amen
