AUTO TRANSFORMER
A transformer in which there will be only one winding which is
common to both primary and secondary transferred by induction
and the rest is by conduction

In a normal transformer, the primary and the secondary

windings are electrically insulated from each other but connected
magnetically as shown in the figure below. While in auto
transformer the primary and the secondary windings are connected
magnetically as well as electrically.

SAMPLE PROBLEM

An autotransformer, designed for 4000 to

2300 volts operation, supplies a load of 32
KW. Calculate a) the transformed power; b)
the conducted power.
SOLUTION
GIVEN:
= 4000V, = 2300V, = 32kW
= = 0.575

(1-K)
=32 kW (1-0.575)
= 13.6 kW
(K)
= 32 kW (0.575)
= 18.4 kW
