Definition of Terms

 A lifting hook is a device for


grabbing and lifting loads by
means of a device such as a hoist
or crane. A lifting hook is usually
equipped with a safety latch to
prevent the disengagement of the
lifting wire rope sling, chain or rope
to which the load is attached.

Clevis hooks come equipped with

Swivel Hook
Swivel hooks allow the hook to
rotate 360°.
• Positioning Swivel Hook - These
swivel hooks are used so the rigger
can rotate the hook to get a properly
aligned and secure attachment to the
load.
• True Swivel Hook with Bearing -
These swivel hooks contain a bearing
that allows the hook to swivel 360°
under load.

Self-Closing Latch Kits
• Self-closing latch kits are spring
loaded safety latches that can either
come standard on a hook or be
added post-sale

Positive Latching Hooks


• A positive latching hook is a hook
whose latch only engages once it is
under load.
• Discard rigging hooks
that are worn more
than 10% of the
original dimension
or are worn beyond a
specific dimension or
tolerance as provided
in a wear allowance
table, chart or
diagram.
• Discard hooks that
have an increase in
throat or slot opening
more than 5% of the
original opening (not
to exceed 1/4 inch).
• Discard hooks with
any visibly apparent
bend or twist from
the plane of the
unbent hook. Replace
load pins that are
permanently
distorted.
• A safety hook latch
that is inoperative or
missing shall be
repaired or replaced.
