What is Signs?
 A sign is a form of language in its own right
and it is specifically meant to communicate
certain information. Signs are usually
informative, regulatory, warning or
prohibitory. A sign is ought to be followed as
it is.

What is
symbol?
  A letter, figure, or other
character or mark or a
combination of letters or
the like used to designate
something.
 Symbol is a form of a sign
that may have deep
meaning. It can be
interpreted in different
ways since its meaning
may not be universally
shared by different people.
Female and Male

 These symbol had been in


commonly used to differentiate
restrooms since 1960’s. Most of
us only know them as the
symbol used to represent male
and female.
Peace Symbol

 This symbol commonly


recognize as the “peace
sign” since the late 50’s
supposedly began as the
logo for Campaign for
Nuclear Disarmament.
Pause Symbol

a button on a video or
music player which can be
pressed to temporarily stop
the playing of the recording.
On/Off Symbol

The power button is a round or square


button that powers an electronic device
on and off. Nearly all electronic devices
have power buttons or power switches.
Power buttons and switches are usually
labeled with "I" and "O" symbols.
The "I" represents power on, and the "O"
represents power off. This designation
will sometimes be I/O or the "I" and "O"
characters on top of each other as a
single character, as in this photo.
COMMA
A punctuation mark (,) indicating a
pause between parts of a sentence. It
is also used to separate items in a list
and to mark the place of thousands in
a large numeral.
COLON
A colon is a punctuation mark that is used to
divide a sentence. The colon resembles two
dots positioned vertically. The colon has a
variety of uses, some of which include
introducing a list, introducing an
explanation, introducing a quote, and
connecting two related sentences.
SEMI COLON

A colon introduces something: usually a


list, sometimes a statement. A semicolon
separates two independent but related
clauses; it may also replace the comma to
separate items in a complicated list.
QUESTION MARK
Aquestion mark, also known as an
interrogation point or interrogation mark, is
a punctuation mark that is used to indicate
that a sentence is a question.
A question mark resembles a hooked line
with a dot underneath.
EXCLAMATION MARK
The exclamation mark, !, or
exclamation point, is a punctuation
mark usually used after an interjection
or exclamation to indicate strong
feelings or to show emphasis.
PARENTHESIS
A word, clause, or sentence inserted as an
explanation or afterthought into a passage
that is grammatically complete without it,
in writing usually marked off by curved
brackets, dashes, or commas.
HYPEN
 The sign -, used to join words to indicate
that they have a combined meaning or that
they are linked in the grammar of a
sentence (as in pick-me-up, rock-forming ),
to indicate the division of a word at the
end of a line, or to indicate a missing or
implied element as in short- and long-term
ELLIPSIS
 Theomission of one or more words that are
obviously understood but that must be
supplied to make a construction
grammatically complete. : a sudden leap
from one topic to another. : marks or a
mark (such as … ) indicating an omission (as
of words) or a pause.
CURLY BRACKET
 Curlybracket (plural curly brackets) Either
of the two characters { and } , i.e., left
curly bracket { and right curly bracket },
with the shape of a curved, pointed line,
having various uses in math, music,
computer programming and chemistry.
APOSTROPHE
A mark ‘ used to indicate the omission of
letters or figures, the possessive case (as in
“John’s book”), or the plural of letters or
figures (as in “the 1960’s”) In the
contraction “can’t,” the apostrophe
replaces two of the letters in the word
“cannot.”.
EQUAL
 Thingsthat are the same size or have the
same traits are said to be equal. When it
comes to people, being equal means
everyone has the same rights and
opportunities — and responsibilities. When
two or more things are level or balanced,
they are said to be equal.
COPYRIGHT SYMBOL
 When you write a “C” with a circle around
the letter, or use the word “copyright,”
you are giving notice to the public that the
work is copyrighted and that you are the
owner of the work. Next to the symbol,
owners should include the year of first
publication and the owner’s full name.
ALMOST EQUAL
The Almost Equal symbol ≈ is
commonly used within
Mathematics to indicate two
values are roughly equal, but not
exactly equal.
FULL STOP/PERIOD
The full stop, period, or full point ., is
a punctuation mark. It is used for
several purposes, most often to mark
the end of a declarative sentence. This
sentence-ending use, alone, defines
the strictest sense of full stop.
BULLET POINT
A bullet point is a symbol that is used in
writing to introduce an item in a list. A
commonly used symbol to represent a
bullet point is a centered dot (•), but
many different symbols and characters
can be used in bullet point lists.
Sometimes, bulleted lists even use
numbers and/or letters.
DAGGER/OBELUS
A dagger, obelisk, or obelus † is a
typographical mark that usually
indicates a footnote if an asterisk
has already been used. The symbol
is also used to indicate death or
extinction.

The prime symbol ( ′ ), double prime


symbol ( ″ ), and triple prime symbol
( ‴ ), etc., are used to designate
several different units, and for various
other purposes in mathematics, the
sciences and linguistics.
REGISTERED TRADEMARK SYMBOL

The registered trademark symbol, ®,


is a typographic symbol that provides
notice that the preceding word or
symbol is a trademark or service mark
that has been registered with a
national trademark office.
TRADEMARK SYMBOL

 The trademark symbol ⟨™⟩ is a symbol to


indicate that the preceding mark is a
trademark, specifically an unregistered
trademark. It complements the registered
trademark symbol ⟨®⟩ which is reserved for
trademarks registered with an appropriate
government agency.
