HISTORY

As the historical view the Jagannath temple was first built


in 10th century by king Jajati Kesari and in the 11th century
the temple was reconstructed in by king the Ananta
Varman Chodaganga Deva and it was finally completed by
Anangabhima Deva in 12th.
DEITIES

•The Jagannath temple contains three principal


deities namely Jagannath, Balabhadra, Subhadra.
•Unlike other idols the deities are not made of
stone or metal they are made of neem tree.
The temple consists of
four structures
(a) the Vimana or Bada
Deula sanctum
sanctorum)
(b) the Jagamohan or
Mukhasala (the
porch),
(c) the Natamandir (the
audience hall) and
(d) the Bhogamandap (the hall
for residuary offerings)
built in a row in an axial
alignment in east-west
direction

RATHA YAHRA
• Ratha Yathra is the
principal festival
celebrated in Odisha at
the Puri Jagannath
temple.
• Ratha Yathra festival is
totally celebrated for 11
days. Generally it takes
two to three days for
reaching summer house
• The gods remain in summer house for four to five days, on
tenth of moon begin their return journey.
• Over ten lakh people attend Ratha Yathra every year.

THE FLAG
•The piece of cloth may be
as big as yatch flag or a
small flag in our hand all
follow same rule.
•But the flag that is hosted
on the top of Jagannath
temple is a exception and it
is against the principal of
wind flow.
•The flag flow in the
opposite direction of the
wind’s course.
SHADOW OF THE TEMPLE
•The principal fact is that
every object will and should
have shadow.
•Jagannath temple does not
have any shadow at all, at any
directions and any time of the
day.
•Not even a single bird is seen
near the dome of the temple.
Hence the government of
Odisha has declared no fly
zone over the dome.
SURDASHAN CHAKRA
•The Sudarshana chakra is
that the hard metal weighing
about 2 tons are pulled up
about 65m without any
machinery and only by
human force during 12th
century.

•Surdashan Chakra is visible from any point of Puri


city, and from any direction you look the surdashan
chakra it looks back with the same appearance. It is
designed such that it looks facing you from every
direction.
PREPARATION AND SERVING OF FOOD
• Traditional way of cooking is
continued in Jagannath temple,
which is one of the largest
temple kitchen in the world.
• The food is prepare in pots at
once 7 pots are used and kept
one over the other and cooked
using fire wood.
• Astonishingly the top most pot
is cooked food, and rest follows
same order.
• Miraculously, the mahaprasada
prepared every day is never
wasted not even small amount of
food is wasted.
MUTE WATER AND REVERSE BREEZE

•Just after you enter the


Singha dwara(Lion gate), the
sound of the ocean waves
completely not audible.
This can be observed clearly
during evening time.

•On any place on the Earth near the coast the breeze comes
from sea to land and opposite happens in the evening. But
in Puri, It is exactly opposite the breeze blows from land to
sea during the day time and opposite in evening.
