MEASURES OF POSITION FOR
UNGROUPED DATA.
Quick Review
Measures of Central Tendency
is a statistic that serves as a representative of the data such as the mean, median
and mode.
Mean is the average.
Median is the middle score.
Mode is the most frequent score.

Measures of Variability or Dispersion

is a statistic that indicates how close or widespread the data are from the average
such as the range, variance and standard deviation.
Range is the difference between the largest and smallest values in that dataset
Variance is the average squared difference of the values from the mean.
Standard Deviation is the standard or typical difference between each data point and the
mean.
Measures of Position or QUANTILES
⮚ indicate the relative position of an observation in an array of data values

⮚ provide information on the percentage of observations which values are less than or
equal to them
The most used quantiles are the quartiles, deciles, and percentiles which divide the
distribution into four, ten, and hundred equal parts, respectively.

QUARTILES are the values that divide a distribution into four equal parts. These values are
denoted by 𝑄𝑘 where 𝑘 = 1, 2 or 3. There are three quartiles represented by 𝑄1, 𝑄2 and 𝑄3.

DECILES are the values that divide the set of data into ten (10) equal parts. These values are
denoted by 𝐷𝑘 where 𝑘 = 1, 2, 3, … , 9. There are nine deciles represented by
𝐷1,𝐷2,𝐷3, . . ., 𝐷9.

PERCENTILES are the values that divide the set of data into one hundred (100) equal parts.
These values are denoted by 𝑃𝑘 where 𝑘 = 1, 2, 3,. . . , 99. There are 99 percentiles
represented by 𝑃1, 𝑃2, 𝑃3, . . . , 𝑃97, 𝑃98, 𝑃99.
Example 1
The following are the number of students in 15 classes selected at random.
40, 39, 42, 48, 45, 46, 42, 49, 43, 42, 41, 40, 38, 42, and 47.

A. What is the first quartile?

B. What is the 5th decile?
C. What is the 75th percentile?
D. Find the value of the interquartile range.
E. Determine the percentile rank of the class with 42.
Example 1
The following are the number of students in 15 classes selected at random.
40, 39, 42, 48, 45, 46, 42, 49, 43, 42, 41, 40, 38, 42, and 47.

A. What is the first quartile?

If the 4th data is 40, then the value of 𝑄1 is

40.
Conclusion: ∴ 𝑇ℎ𝑒 𝑣𝑎𝑙𝑢𝑒 𝑜𝑓 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑓𝑖𝑟𝑠𝑡
𝑞𝑢𝑎𝑟𝑡𝑖𝑙𝑒 𝑖𝑠 40.

Interpretation:
∴ 25% of the classes have less than or equal to 40
students.

▪ Determine the value of the first quartile ∴ 75% of the classes have greater than 40 students.
Since the computed value for the position of 𝑄1 is exactly 4 ,
then 𝑄1 is the 4th data in the distribution.
Example 1
The following are the number of students in 15 classes selected at random.
40, 39, 42, 48, 45, 46, 42, 49, 43, 42, 41, 40, 38, 42, and 47.

B. What is the 5th decile?

If the 8th data is 42, then the value of D5 is

42.
Conclusion: ∴ 𝑇ℎ𝑒 𝑣𝑎𝑙𝑢𝑒 𝑜𝑓 𝑡ℎ𝑒 fifth
decile 𝑖𝑠 42.

Interpretation:
∴ 50% of the classes have less than or equal to 42
students.
▪ Determine the value of the fifth decile. ∴ 50% of the classes have greater than 42 students.
Since the computed value for the position of D5 is exactly 8, then
D5 is the 8th data in the distribution.
Example 1
The following are the number of students in 15 classes selected at random.
40, 39, 42, 48, 45, 46, 42, 49, 43, 42, 41, 40, 38, 42, and 47.

C. What is the 75th percentile?

If the 12th data is 46, then the value of P75 is

46.
Conclusion: ∴ 𝑇ℎ𝑒 𝑣𝑎𝑙𝑢𝑒 𝑜𝑓 𝑡ℎ𝑒 75th
percentile 𝑖𝑠 46.

Interpretation:
∴ 75% of the classes have less than or equal to 46
students.
▪ Determine the value of the 75th percentile. ∴ 25% of the classes have greater than 46 students.
Since the computed value for the position of P75 is exactly 12,
then P75 is the 12th data in the distribution.
Example 1
The following are the number of students in 15 classes selected at random.
40, 39, 42, 48, 45, 46, 42, 49, 43, 42, 41, 40, 38, 42, and 47.
