BASIC CONCEPTS OF
ELECTROCHEMISTRY
• Depending upon the flow of electrons substances are divided into 4
types
CONDUCTORS
• Allows the passage of electric current
• Eg:Metals, metal sulphides, acids, alkalis, salt sol. and fused salts
NON CONDUCTORS
• do not allow electricity

• Ex: Pure water, dry wood, rubber, paper, non-metals etc

SEMI CONDUCTORS
• partially conduct electricity .
• The conducting properties of semi-conducting properties are
increased by the
addition of certain impurities called “dopping
CONDUCTORS
• electrical conductors are of two types.
1. Metallic or Electronic conductors.
2. Electrolytic conductors

• Electrical conductance through metals – electronic

conductance
Depends on:
• Nature and structure of the metal
• Number of valence electron per atom
• Density of the metal
• Temperature
• Conductance decreases with increase in temperature
ELECTROLYTES OR ELECTROLYTIC
CONDUCTORS
• Electricity passed through their molten state or aqueous solutions
• Eg: acids, bases and salts
• Since electrolytic solution- electrolytic conduction
• Conduction by ions- ionic conductance
DIFFERENCE:
NON ELECTROLYTES

• Do not conduct electricity either in the molten state or aq.solutions

• Eg: sugar, glucose, ethyl alcohol etc
