Machine Design II
(ME 408)
where:
h = rim thickness
N = number of spokes
Example:
Determine the tangential stress, bending stress and the approximate total stress in the rim of a
steel flywheel of 70 in. average diameter, weight density 0.275 lb./in. 3, rotating at an average
speed of 300 rpm and having six spokes with uniform area of cross-section. The width and
thickness of the rim are 10 in. and 5 in., respectively.
Where:
V = [{πD(Nr)} / (60 × 12)]
= [(π × 70 × 30) / (60 × 12)
= 92 fps
and the bending stress σb due to bending of the rim considering rim as a beam connected
between the spokes is given by
σb = [(12π2γsV2) / (hN2g)]
The total stress in the rim can be found by the following equation.
